[comp.sys.amiga] Questions about 1.3 to developer types

I just saw a review of KS/WB 1.3 in some magazine (not AC or AmigaWORLD), and
I had a few questions. The magazine had a picture of an open workbench window
and a new preferences screen, and reviewed KS/WB 1.3, gamma _4_. The
article claimed that you could _reboot_ the recoverable ram disk; I had a
sick idea. I know that you can't mount the boot device under the FFS, since
you need to read the file-system handler from the L: directory during a MOUNT
command, and that if you boot from DF0:, the system automagically mounts all
3.5" disks for you (under SFS). If you boot from RAM: (called CARD: under
gamma 4), or from DH0:, do the 3.5" floppies automatically mount? Can you
mount the 3.5" floppies under FFS? I want to use _real_ 512 byte blocks for
archive floppies, not 512 byte blocks with label space in each block. I
realize that the extra space is >5%, but free space is free space.

Thanks,
-ethan

From what I understand, FFS currently supports only fixed media...
That is, non-removeable media. I.E. a hard drive.

That's Sentry Magazine. Good Scoop for them, terrible article.

CARD: (name may change) is not in place of RAM:, but instead in addition to.
CARD: (or RAD:, Recoverable Amiga Disk) is a fixed size drive, and takes all
memory it will ever use at mount time, so RAM: is still VERY necessary, it is
also very FIXED under 1.3.

Yes, the floppies are automatically mounted (rom based, yeh know?)

Well, there are some problems here, the answer is, yes, you can mount the
floppies again and have two device names with seperate information kept
about each. If you mount a standard floppy as FD1: with all the same info
as it currently has, it will work just fine, only if you write to FD1: and
then read from DF1:, the bitmap for DF1: will be corrupt. So, you could
infact mount FD1: with the FastFileSystem, but (and this is the big "but"),
the current FastFileSystem, will not support automatic disk ejection
recognition. So, either you can never eject the disk, or you have to issue
the diskchange command for every time you remove a floppy. And ofcourse,
you can't use DF1: without changing floppies, and LOTS of software only
knows how to look for DFn: ...

The above is not sanctioned by Amiga/Commodore.
