The Amiga 1080 monitor has some audio and video problems that can be improved at very low cost. Phil Crosby investigated the problems, solved them on his own monitor, and has given the information to me to distribute. The attached shar archive contains 5 files. I created the README file, which tells about the other four files and about my experiences when I applied Phil's modifications to my own 1080 monitor. The README file is just text, created with emacs, and can be read with the Type command under the CLI. The 1080Mods file (along with 1080Mods.info) is a Notepad file, which must be read using the Notepad. The 1080Fixes file (along with 1080Fixes.info) is a picture file which contains the schematic for the audio amplifier. All except the README file are uuencoded (to preserve non-printable and/or binary information) and must be uudecoded before they can be used. To repeat a caution that I gave in the README file: If you are not used to working on electronic equipment that contains high voltages, be smart -- get someone else to do this modification for you!!! This exposes you to the X danger of electric shock! X X There is approximately 25,000 volts on the picture tube when the X monitor is in operation. A significant fraction of this voltage X will remain with the monitor off! The audio output stage has a X +100 volt DC supply. And there are other dangerous voltages inside X the monitor as well. The original part was a wound mylar or Xpolypropylene (or some such). I replaced it with a 0.01 uF +/- 20% ceramic Xcapacitor rated at 250 V. X XIf you can find a mylar 0.01 uF at 50 volts or more, that should be fine. XHowever, don't use a 50 volt ceramic part (ceramic capacitors can change Xvalue as a function of applied voltage -- the effect is reduced when the Xapplied voltage is less than 20% of the rated voltage). And don't use a Xcapacitor that is rated 0.01 uF +80% -20%! This indicates that the Xcapacitor is probably made of a material referred to as "Z5U", which Xundergoes dramatic value changes as a function of temperature and applied Xvoltage. X XWhether you use a ceramic part or a mylar part, make sure that it is rated X0.01 uF +/- 20% (or better). X X X X X X XPhil made the crossover distortion modification by lifting the collector Xof Q605 (see the schematic) and then wiring directly to the collector lead Xon the top of the board. I did it a bit differently. X XThe collector of Q605 is connected to the base of Q604 by a run (on the back Xof the board) that is quite fat for most of its length (perhaps 0.2" wide). XHowever, right near the collector lead of Q605, it necks down to a narrow Xtrace (0.050", maybe?) for about 1/4 of an inch. I cut the run at both ends Xof the narrow part and lifted that (narrow) piece of foil off the board. X XThen, I removed D601 from the board and cleaned the solder out of the holes Xthe diode had been in. I soldered the 33-Ohm resistor onto the cathode lead Xof the diode (very close to it), slipped a bit of clear heat-shrink tubing Xover the two and heated the tubing to shrink it. Finally, I slipped the Xanode lead of the diode into the hole it had come from (but from the back Xof the board), soldered it in place, and wrapped the resistor lead around Xthe end of the collector lead of Q605. X XTo prepare the two added diodes, I soldered them together in series, slid Xa piece of heat-shrink tubing over them, and heated the tubing to shrink it. XThen, I inserted the anode lead of the diode string into the hole the Xcathode of D601 had been in (from the back of the board), soldered it in Xplace, and wrapped the cathode lead of the diode string around the end of Xthe collector lead of Q605. X XSoldering the two wires to the end of the collector lead of Q605 completed Xthe the audio modification. I then dressed the two series strings of parts Xaway from leads that stick through the board to prevent short circuits. X XBe sure you know what you are doing when you make the crossover distortion Xmodification! If you put D601 in backwards, you will make the audio *much* Xworse, and perhaps blow the diode (in which case you would have no audio at Xall!). If you put either or both of the two added diodes in backwards, you Xwill most likely blow them out (or perhaps just avalanche them), resulting Xin grossly-distorted audio or no audio at all. There is usually Xa band around one end of the diode which indicates the cathode end. X X X X X X XI found one other problem with my monitor. At the back of the monitor Xthere is a board which contains the input connectors. The RCA phono Xjacks had not been seated against the board when it was manufactured. XThus, every time the audio and composite video connectors were plugged Xin, the force was taken by the copper foil on the back of the board. XAfter a while, it just gave way, leaving intermittent connections. X XI unscrewed and removed the metal plate that is attached to the board, Xheated up the connections on the phono jacks (there are 3 on each jack), Xand pushed the jack body firmly against the board. Then, I scraped off Xsome of the solder mask (greenish stuff) covering the foil runs and Xsolder-bridged the areas where the foil had pulled loose. X X X X X XThe result?
