[comp.sys.amiga] Some information on REXX

urjlew@ecsvax.UUCP (Rostyk Lewyckyj) (04/07/88)

From recent postings in this group I somehow got the impression
that REXX was developed by Bill Hawes. That is untill my beliefs
were corrected by the following, posted in the last several days
on comp.lang.rexx. I am reposting it here, !without! the original
posters permission, because I think it is informative in its own
right and to correct the same wrong belief that I had, in others.

Michael F. Cowlishaw is the designer of REXX (originally called REX.) and is
currently employed by IBM United Kingdom, Ltd. Mike is apparently accessable
only through VNET, (though he has appeared on VMSHARE) with the permission of
IBM and himself.

REXX was designed during the period 1979-1982 at the IBM United Kingdom
Laboratories, Ltd at Hursley, England and at IBM's T. J. Watson Research
Center at Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. The initial implementation of
REXX was on Vm/CMS with distribution to over 1400 mainframes in 40 countries
via VNET. Several hundred people participated in the refinement of REXX via
VNET.

Information on REXX can be found in the following publications:

Virtual Machine/System Product System Product Interpreter Reference.
SC24-5239. IBM Corporation. 1984.

Virtual Machine/System Product System Product Interpreter User's Guide.
SC24-5238. IBM Corporation. 1984.

'MEMO REXX.' VMSHARE electronic bulletin board system.

The REXX Language: A Practical Approach to Programming. M. F. Cowlishaw.
ISBN 0-13-780735-X. Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Prentice-Hall. 1985.

Modern Programming Using REXX. Robert O'Hara and David Gomberg. Englewood
Cliffs, N.J. Prentice-Hall. 1985.

The design of the REXX language. IBM Systems Journal. Vol. 23. No. 4.
1984. M. F. Cowlishaw. pp. 326-335.

REXX is implemented on:

IBM VM/CMS
IBM OS/TSO
IBM EM/370 (YMS) (Experimental at IBM)
IBM REXX/PC (part of the IBM PC/VM Bond product)
IBM System/370 Interpreter
Personal REXX (Mansfield Software)
