wait They don't need to abandon the Zorro II bus at all, AND they can also have the 32 bit memory they'll need in order to run a 68030 properly. What you do is borrow a technique from the uVaxII ... have a seperate memory bus. Disk controllers, ethernet cards, and most of the gadgets that you'd want to have in your machine all will work fine on a 16 bit bus. The only thing you really need a 32 bit bus for is full speed memory access. Am I missing something? I suppose that the cards in the 16 bit bus will need to write to memory eventually. Now, the uVaxII has 1 meg on its processor card to handle this situation, the same could be done by providing some memory for the 16 bit bus and fixing the OS to have devices write to the 16 bit memory area.
