[comp.sys.amiga] A2090 / MiniScribe problems

jdp@killer.UUCP (Jim Pritchett) (04/13/88)

I previously posted a message about getting Dos errors such as 'not an
object module' and 'insufficient memory' when trying to run OnLine! when my
hard disk is mounted. Well, further information is now available, but the
problem has not yet been resolved. Dan Schein of CA suggested that the read
protection bit might have been cleared, but according to the List command, it
is set to allow reading.
Now, for some further information. I started doing some diffs on various
hard disk files. The OnLine! starts showing differences in the 80 to 100K area
of the file depending upon when it is copied into the HD (phases of the moon?)
So, I thought, "Aha I have a lead here!" I checked various other files on the
system. All the small files that I checked were ok. I checked a 300K text file
and it was ok. Not having any other handy large executables, I cheated and
joined several copies of Preferences in order to get a large executeable type
file and copied it to the HD. Sure enough, it showed differences in the 100K
range after copying! So, it seems that I am getting write errors on large
executeables - but wait. I also copied OnLine! to my DH0: partition once and
diff showed it unchanged. But, when I tried to execute that one, I crashed the
system in a similar manner to previous attempts. (Sometimes gurus visited
instead of Dos errors.) So, now it seems that I have read errors on large
executeables. (Or possibly both. Or neither. Help!!!) I am at a loss as
to what to try next. Has anyone out there had similar problems? Any helpful
suggestions will be appreciated.

Now, I think that I need to provide more info on my setup. I am running
a December vintage A2000 with A2090, 20 Meg 3.5" MiniScribe, 2 Meg Starboard,
2400 Baud USRobotics modem, and C. Itoh Prowriter printer. My software setup
is CLIClock (a very old reliable menu bar clock), MWB, Conman, and vd0:. By
the way, I seem to have the revised hd driver that was posted to CompuServe
last fall. The hardware/software setup has been running very well from vd0:
for quite a while (and on my A1000 before that.)

                                    Thank you,
                                                 Jim Pritchett

PS. I am running the ARP commands also.

A few days ago I posted a couple of messages about some problems that I
had with my hard drive. Well, Andy Finkel (of CA fame) sent me Email suggesting
that I contact Microbotics about some mods to their StarBoard Adapter for the
A2000. Since they are local to me, I contacted them and exchanged my adapter
for a newer one with the mods installed. IT WORKED!!! (I hope that it is not
too early to say-type that.) Anyway the new adapter seems to have solved my
hard drive errors and strangenesses.
Thanks, Andy. (Thanks also to Dan Schein who tried to help, but did not
have the correct answer to my problem.) It is really great to have so many
helpful CA folks and others on the net. I hope that my experience will be
helpful to others out there who may be having similar problems.
