[comp.sys.amiga] Star Gemini-10x printer problem solved!

[ 4 out of 5 line eaters prefer the taste of A-1 line sauce ]

I finally found the problem with extra line feeds in my output, while printing
graphics to my gemini-10x; the answer was in the Enhancer (KW/WB 1.2) manual,
on page 8. The entry for page 7-8 of the manual "Introduction to the Amiga,"
revision D, says that the cure for blank lines in dot-matrix printout is to
select Custom paper size in preferences. What I wanna know is why? Is this
a bug or a 'feature'? Is this a problem under WB1.3? Has anyone else ever
had to set the paper size to Custom, or am I the only poor unfortunate slob?
Is anyone still reading this?

Question to CA: What difference does paper size make? Why does this
		 hack work?

The answer to your question is simple. The paper feed machanism of
your printer is sloppy. The printer driver tells the printer to move the
paper up 24/216 (that's 8/72) of an inch which IS the height of 8 dots on
the print head. On some printers (due to sloppy gears) this moves the paper
up slightly more than 8 pins (ie. this is NOT the printer drivers fault).

The 'Custom' paper type was put in to give the user a way of
specifing to the driver that he/she has one of these strange printers.
With 'Custom' selected the printer driver moves the paper up 23/216
(or 1/3 dot less than normal). This usually cures the problem.

Under V1.3 this 'feature' has been moved to 'Paper Type'.
'Fanfold' is the default and the norm. A 'Paper Type' of 'Single'
enables the 'kludge'. It was moved as we now use a paper type of
narrow and wide tractor to distinguish between narrow and wide carriage
printers.

The V1.3 printers which support the paper feed kludge are:

	CBM_MPS-1000, Epson_X[CBM_MPS-1250], and Okidata_293I.

	Regards, D.B.
