[net.general] Sensor technology query

pcmcgeer (07/29/82)

	A group at the University of Waterloo is investigating an application
of low-range, sensitive, sensor technology. The trouble is, we aren't sure if
the technology we've got (baseband radar) is state-of-the art. So, does
anyone out there know of a sensor technology that:

a) Uses EM radiation (eg radar, video, etc) or ultrasonics;
b) Has high range and horizontal displacement resolution over a short range
( .5m <= x <= 100m );
c) Is low cost ( max $2k/unit )
d) Has high mass and x-section resolution?
e) Is tested and available?

	I know I'm dreaming, but is there anything out there that even comes
close? Video would be ideal, but the processing for edge effects takes forever
unless you've got Pentagon-like funds to play with. We don't, and we need
realtime response. Heard anything? Rumours? Hard facts?

	Please reply by mail to decvax!utzoo!watmath!pcmcgeer.

ps - the potential application is much like automotive collision avoidance,
automotive collision detection systems will surely help us. Thanks again,
