I experienced the same problem a while back and posted roughly the same
question. Here is the response that I got:

}Yes, you can control the color table... but you have to have Sculpt version
}1.1 or higher and you need to know some hidden features first! In the
}interactive mode, select the "DOWN" window and type "CNTRL-D". A requesterfor the magic number will appear! Type "123".
}Now you can trace your first image and then activate these two new menu items:
}OBSERVER-MODE-COLOR LOCK and OBSERVER-EXPOSURE-LOCK. Now you can
}generate your remaining images. You must also regenerate your first image
}so that the color lock will be constant throughout the animation. For more
}info, get the latest version of Sculpt-Anim1_w-sound disk!
}
}?

Can you believe it? A #%@$# magic number?
It does work, though.

Good luck

    Hi ,

Did anyone tried to use the programs dilbm, pilbm and movie that
exist on Fred Fish disk #116 to create an animation ??

The dilbm is the one that create files containing the differences
    between two picture (iff) files.
I have a problem using this one. I used Sculpt-3d to create some
(about 10 just to try) pictures of wired-frame shperes.
Dilbm did found the differences and works well with those files.
When I create then my pictures using the painting mode creating
    the HAM pictures,dilbm does'nt work .
It give me a "color maps difference" then a lot of lines with
    Pen 01 .........(numbers here...)
    Pen 02.........
    	.
    	.
Pen 31 ....... I think these numbers are the RGB #'s fo the registers
And the output file is empty.
With the wired-frame file, it does'nt give me this "color maps
    difference".

Am I doing something wrong ??

    well...
in fact I should ask something different...
How can you create 2 pictures using Sculpt-3d (sorry I don't have
animate 3-d yet..) that have the same color map ??

Phil
