We have the new (device-independent) TROFF running on a VAX 11/780 (4.1 BSD Unix) to a Linotron 202 phototypesetter. What I'd like to know is: 1) Who else is running the new TROFF? What devices are you using? What system? In particular, has someone put it on a SUN (or PERQ, or Apollo) yet? 2) Can TROFF be nudged to go a little faster, say by cacheing macro requests or reading pseudo-compiled macro files? 3) Does anyone have much information on other formatting programs that run under Unix? I know about SCRIBE and TEX so far, and wonder if anyone out there is making them talk to each other. 4) What interactive edit/display/format programs are there, either planned or working? I've seen things about BRAVO (Xerox PARC), PEN (Yale), Etude (MIT), and JANUS (IBM). Where are some design/construction ideas to draw from? For what it's worth, the new TROFF works well. To configure it for another device you just edit some tables in text files. I'll answer any questions on it, and would appreciate info on the stuff above. --- Bill Lubanovic --- U. of Minnesota Computing Center ... ihnss!ihps3!stolaf!minn-ua!wal or ... decvax!pur-ee!minn-ua!wal
