Please, don't take this as an attempt to start a stupid "my computer is better than yours war." I own a Mac, and am happy with it. I suspect that the people in this group are happy with their Amigas. But I do have a couple of questions for you. 1. What made you choose the Amiga? 2. What does it do well? 3. What does it not do well? 4. How does it differ from the Mac? 5. What features do you make use of on a day-to-day basis? 6. What features do you rarely use? 7. What breaks, and how often? (Like how often does it crash?) I really am interested, because I hear that the Amiga is a nice machine. Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to play with one. I would tell you all about the Mac, except that there are probably a large number of people on this group who aren't interested. If you like, you can e-mail me. Thanks! Why don't we help this gentleperson avoid starting flames and boredom by
responding exclusively via EMail, or not at all. That way, one of the
best reasons to buy an Amiga will be our relatively high signal-to-noise
ratio in our usenet newsgroup.

Opinions are my own. Comments regarding the Amiga operating system, and
all others, are NOT to be taken as Commodore official policy.

I like the graphics and sound capabilities of the Amiga. I want to merge animation and things recorded from the VCR. A big factor was the Multitasking capability. >2. What does it do well? See above. I have renamed many of my commands so they are the same as the UNIX commands I use at work. (No they work different but the "copy" command is now "cp" on my Amiga.) >3. What does it not do well? The interlaced mode is bad because it flickers. This is a function of my monitor, not the computer. The multitasking capability is somewhat disappointing. (WHOA THERE AMIGOIDS!!!) This is due to the software, again, not the computers. (Elect. Arts.) >4. How does it differ from the Mac? The MAC only has a one button mouse. The MAC is not color. The MAC does not mulitask like the Amiga. I don't know the details about this. (This info. is from the guy that sits next to me at work that owns a Madfjkdsh (Damn just can't seem to type it.:-) ) ) >5. What features do you make use of on a day-to-day basis? I usually use just the basic computer type stuff such as communication and text generation.(Read word processing) I am looking into desktop publishing and animation. >6. What features do you rarely use? The graphics and sound. I will in the future however. >7. What breaks, and how often? (Like how often does it crash?) I have recently had problems downloading stuff directly to my printer from my machine at work. (an HP machine) I didn't have this problems with my Okimate-20 but I recently got an hp DeskJet. (which works great except for this problem.) The system just locks up - no Guru or anything. >I really am interested, because I hear that the Amiga is a nice machine. >Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to play with one. Thank you for asking about the differences intelligently, and not being one of those "my computers great and yours is ca-ca" morons. Multi-tasking >2. What does it do well? Multi-task. Really, I'm not kidding. If you've never had multi-tasking (not that fake they call Multi-Finder, ever worked on a Sun?), you won't consider it important. If you've EVER had multi-tasking, you won't consider any computer important without it! Also, HAM is great. I collect HAM nudes and I might as well have a magazine on the screen. (sounds perverted, but its a gentleman's pursuit) HAM stands for Hold And Modify which allows 4096 colors on the screen at once. Right now the only constraint is that the digitizing software can't decide which color to choose 100% of the time. >3. What does it not do well? Adding peripherals are a bear for my A1000. Cost is prohibitive. Intuition is slow. 2M really slows process switching. A2000 corrects first two gripes. >4. How does it differ from the Mac? APPLE SUPPORTS THEIR MACHINES!! Mac has REAL system software. Mac has a new OS every 8 mo. However:::: Amy has true multi-tasking in 256K. >5. What features do you make use of on a day-to-day basis? Multi-Tasking. I edit multiple documents DAILY!! I download, print docs, and play Conquest WEEKLY SIMULTANEOUSLY!! i love the mouse. >6. What features do you rarely use? Music. Voice Synthesis. >7. What breaks, and how often? (Like how often does it crash?)
