[comp.sys.amiga] Help! I trashed a disk with IconED

LordBah@cup.portal.com (05/27/88)

[I thought all line-eaters were dead by now?]

Hey, I'm a new A500 owner, I can be expected to make mistakes. Anyway,
I got tired of all my disk icons looking alike on the workbench, so I
decided to try to use IconED from the Workbench 1.2 disk to change them.
Well, it couldn't load "diskname:.info" so I thought I would try
"diskname:Disk.info". Sure enough, that was the right icon. After I
altered it and wrote it back out, the system gurued every time that
disk was inserted into the drive. Just once it did manage to paint the
new icon on the screen before it crashed, and it was the altered version.

So, how do I fix this disk? I would like to get the information that
is on it, or I would just reformat.

Thanks. - lordbah@cup.portal.com OR sun!cup.portal.com!lordbah

Howdy,

Sounds VEEERRRRRY strange... I've done the same thing (on a hard disk) with no
problems, using IconED. Sounds like something something was not written back
right...pulled disk out too soon.

If there was nothing special about the disk, try copying over it using a tool
like Maurader, Project 'D', QuickCopy or from a CLI with diskcopy (see note
  below).

Try not bringing up Workbench...(leave in CLI... ^D during boot if need be).
Next try to look at the Disk.info file...if you cannot because the disk is
"Not a DOS disk" or some such...try running DiskSalv (Thanks Dave Haynie)
  to recover.
If the disk verifies OK, look at the file with a disk sector editor and have
some digestable description of what should be out there like the newest
version of AmiTransactor...does it all look OK?

If all this looks OK, then I am stumped...try a genuine local Amiga wizard.
