[comp.sys.amiga] RunBack with path search

ins_adjb@jhunix.HCF.JHU.EDU (Daniel Jay Barrett) (05/20/88)

Many of you are probably familiar with Rob Peck's PD program
"RunBack". It allows you to "run" a program in the background and then
close the CLI in which you invoked it. ("Run" does not allow the CLI to
be closed.)

The only problem with RunBack is that it does not search your
command search path, and Run does. I have added this capability to
my copy of RunBack. Would anyone like a copy?

Dan,

I would be very interested in a copy of it. Please email it to me -- I'll
post it on my bbs.

I use it religiously!

How did you do it? And, boy would I like a copy! Can I get you to mail it
to me? Thanks in advance.

Just a note about 1.3 - The 1.3 Run command no longer leaves a lock
on the CLI it was called from if you redirect output to NIL:. So, as
long as the command you are running doesn't grab its own locks on "*",
you can RUN >NIL: command and still be able to ENDCLI the cli or shell.
RUN, of course, does search the command path.

but, a few messages prior (on my machine),

It sounds like the binary for the 1.3 Run will not be identical to the
1.2 binary, and the change sounds more like a bug fix or an enhancement than
an autoboot fix :-??>. Also, I read in AmigaWorld (sorry - I
haven't yet cancelled my subscription 'cause I like the ads) that 1.3
would contain a recoverable ram disk and other new things. Que Pasa?

Correct.  1.3 ROM/Kickstart == 1.2 ROM/Kickstart + autoboot capability,
i.e. the ability to boot off autoboot hardware (like a hard disk controller
with autoboot ROM harddisk driver on board). This also gives you the
ability to reboot off the recoverable ramdrive supplied on Workbench 1.3.

1.3 Workbench on the other hand, is quite different from 1.2 Workbench.
There have been lots of enhancements in the CLI commands, the math libraries,
the printer device and drivers, etc.
