I've seen a lot of postings here and there asking "Hey! How can I make my 3.5" MS-Dos format disks hold 720K instead of just 360K when I use the Amiga Transformer?" To these questions I've seen replies ranging from "You can't do that" to "Uh... I think I have the instructions somewhere.." (I plead guilty myself to using that second reply sometimes :-) Well, whist cleaning up some disks tonite I found this old text file. If you ever intend to use the Amiga Transformer with MS-DOS 3.2 or higher and want to format and use 720K 3.5" disks instead of measly 360K disks, then capture this, print it out, and put it someplace you won't lose it ----- These are the instructions for formatting 3 1/2 inch disks at 720K using the Amiga Transformer with MS-DOS 3.2 and up. These instructions are for MS-DOS 3.2 and up ONLY!! The drivers for the 3 1/2 inch drive are not on earlier versions of DOS. 1. You will need to set up a CONFIG.SYS file on your IBM DOS disk. If you use EDLIN to do this jump to instrction # 4 and create the file with these two lines. If you are not familiar with EDLIN follow all of the instructions. (EDLIN is an MS-DOS line editor which is supplied with MS-DOS... it's sort of like the Amiga "Edit" editor which is usually the first thing that gets deleted off a WorkBench disk to make room ;-) 2. Make sure you have the DOS prompt A> . If you don't have the prompt, type A: and then [RETURN]. 3. Type at the "A>" prompt... copy con config.sys press [ENTER] 4. Then type... DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:1 DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:2 5. Press the F6 key and then [ENTER] 6. This creates the CONFIG.SYS file on your DOS disk. However, it will not be in effect until the next time you start DOS. There are a lot of other commands that can be added to the CONFIG.SYS file. They are covered in the DOS 3.2 manual on pages 4-6 thru 4-34. You can substitute a different drive number (0 thru 255) in the commands in line 4. The reason I set it up this way was because of the way my drives are set up. The numbers refer to the physical location in the set-up (0 is A, 1 is B, etc.) You can use any drive number you wish as long as you substitute it in the same place in the line. The only thing I would advise is not using the 5 1/4 inch drive for a 720K drive. REMEMBER!!! It is VERY!! important to remember that the physical drive set-up under the transformer is determined by software... NOT!!! the actual physical location in the drive chain. The end result of all of this is if you have the transformer set up with only an A: and B: drive you do not need the second line in the CONFIG.SYS file because there is no third drive in the chain in the Transformer's "mind". If you wish you can set up a file using 0 and 1 as drive numbers. Harv Laser, Sysop, The People/Link AmigaZone. Plink: CBM*HARV UUCP: {anybackbone}!gryphon!pnet02!hrlaser INET: hrlaser@pnet02.cts.com
