AmigaTeX is available from

       Norman Naugle
       n^2 Computer Consultants
       P.O. Box 2736
       College Station, Texas 77841

They didn't provide a phone number though. According to the ad, This version
of TeX was written in C. It runs on a 512K 2-floppy drive system. With
additional memory it is possible to run an editor, the previewer, and TeX
in multitasking mode.

The package includes TeX, LaTeX, IniTeX, and a previewer with fonts. The
product is priced at $300.00

And the attribution/etc and this line have been added to beat the 50%
rule. Damn - never got bit by it before...

One caveat: The last time I checked, Amiga TeX/LaTex did not support
all the printers in Preferences (TeX uses its own fonts, drivers, etc.).

Does anyone know whether the latest version of Amiga TeX/LaTeX supports
multifont output on Okimate 20's? For that matter, what dot-matrix
printers are currently supported by TeX/LaTeX?

My apologies for using the net to respond to Tom Rokicki. The infor-mation may be of interest to others but basically I could not connect to him via email.
I have run the TeX system with and without 32bit ram. To process the blit.tex
file takes about 25 seconds in 32 bit ram and 105 seconds in 16 bit ram. This
is using an ASDG board and all TeX fis stored on vd0:.

If anybody is working with TeX for the Amy, I'd like to get some first
hand information, like quality of printout, price etc.
Since IMHO TeX is the best tool for someone preparing a scientific
report, I cannot understand why the Amiga version meets so little
interest.

I am just starting work on a Masters degree here at Uvic, and was
planning on using Tex for my thesis. Where can I find Tex for the Amiga.
Is there some PD stuff out there ( starving student 8-) or does it
actually cost money. It would sure be nice to work on the thesis at home,
especially if it is comparable to using the suns on campus.

Thanks in advance,
		Brian

Sorry Brian, it costs money. All told, about $300. Which is a lot less
than Addison-Wesley sells their stuff for, from the A-W book on LaTeX :
TeX + LaTeX + Previewer + PrinterDriver = $295 + $25 + $250 + $200 = $775.

You can order it from Radical Eye Software, (that's Tom Rokicki whose email
address is rokicki@polya.STANFORD.EDU) I don't have any financial affiliation
with Tom, but I did buy a copy of TeX. You might consider showing it around
your department. As soon as they figure out that an Amiga 2000 with TeX makes
a nicer TeX workstation than a Sun they may just buy a bunch.

Actually, if you need to save money at all costs (huh?), you can get just TeX
and the previewer for $200. I am assuming that you have a modem, and that you
can access a mini/mainframe TeX installation for printing. This way you just
upload the .dvi file and print it out. You may even get typesetter quality
this way.
If you need decent quality output you need at least a 24-pin printer. [I have
seen TeXtures (on Mac) output on an ImagewriterII. Yucky]. So you
may have to consider the printer cost if you don't already have it.

Following is a summary of all answers I've got concerning the article
in which I asked for information on TeX.
Thanks to all of you!

: ===============
: From: "Michael van Elst" <unido!immd4.informatik.uni-erlangen.de!mlelstv:
:
: For each printer and previewer there are more than 2000 fonts (including
: different sizes).
: In order to use TeX efficiently, you should have more than 1MB RAM and
: a hard disk, or else you have to swap disks for each new font.
:
:

: From: unido!csli.stanford.edu!kasper (Kasper Osterbye)
:
: There is to my knowledge only one TeX for the amiga, but it
: is the best TeX I have seen in a long while.
: Here are the highlights as I see them.
:
: * A VERY GOOD previewer.
:
: * Accepts the foreign letters in the amiga files.
:
: * Good support from Tom (Address below)
:
: * Wellbehaved in the multi processing environment.
:
: * The TeX program has a special loop mode, so that one can have it sitting
: resident and compile the file and preview it several time (after changes)
:
:
: ===============
: From: unido!csvax.caltech.edu!glewis (Glenn M. Lewis)
:
: On the contrary, the Amiga version is the best implementation of
: TeX on *any* computer. I think the reason that you wrote that last sentence
: is that you don't see advertisements for it, and since it works so well,
: you don't hear about it on the net.
:
:
: ===============
: From: unido!ece-csc.ncsu.edu!rss (ML)
:
:
: AmigaTeX is a superb package. If you can get access to news postings from
: a couple of months back, I think you'll find that TeX got quite a bit of
: discussion, all of it rave reviews.
:
: AmigaTeX comes with a very nice previewer package as well, something which
: is NOT going to come with all implementations of TeX. AmigaTeX also
: has an AREXX port, so if you have AREXX and other programs which support
: AREXX (such as your text editor) you can make the software pieces work
: well with each other.
:
:
: ===============
: From: unido!snll-arpagw!paolucci (Sam Paolucci)
:
: A number of print drivers
: are available: QMS KISS, QMS SmartWriter, HP LaserJet Plus, PostScript,
: Epson LQ series, Epson MX series, Citizen 150-D, NEC P6/P7, and Image
: Writer II. Any of the above driver costs $100. The cost includes a
: set of complete fonts for that driver and consists anywhere between
: 5 to 8 disks. I use both the PostScript and NEC P6/P7 driver constantly
: and I can say that the output on either is excellent. Througout the
: time the I have been using the product neither TeX, the previewer, or
: a driver as ever crashed the machine. Let me say that in order to use
: LaTex you will need 1MB of memory with not much else running, and for
: just TeX you can use 512KB of ram, but nothing else running, including
: not opening the RAM disk! In only two cases I have found minor bugs
: in the PostScript driver and after a call to Tom it was fixed within
: a couple of days. I recommend TeX highly for anybody who does
: technical writing.
:

: From: "Tomas G. Rokicki" <unido!polya.Stanford.EDU!rokicki:
:
: Thanks a lot for the interest! To get AmigaTeX in Germany, you will
: have to send mail to unido!fubinf!ram, or call him; he is Stefan RAM of
: technicSupport (or some such.) If you have trouble getting in touch
: with him, let me know. I'm not sure what he charges for the package.

Let me add that the answers I got have persuaded me to order TeX at once.
