I have an Amiga 2000 with a 3.5 inch floppy installed in one bay and
a 3.5 inch hard drive in another. I also have a 3.5 inch external
floppy.
This leaves the 5.25 inch drive bay empty. Lately, I have been thinking
that it would be nice to put a 5.25 inch floppy drive in that bay so
that I can read and write IBM compatible floppies.
Can I put any IBM compatible 5.25 inch, 360K floppy in there?
Can I put an AT compatible 1.2 Meg floppy in there? Can those things
read and write 360K diskettes?
I envision the installation as:
Connect the other connector on the ribbon cable (the data cable) that
is connected to DF0: to the 5.25 inch floppy.
Connect one of the spare power cables in the Amiga to the 5.25 floppy.
(I seem to remember that the power cables in the Amiga for drives come
in two flavors with two separate styles of connector. Do I have one
of the proper type left given my current setup?)
Mount the disk in the drive bay. Am I likely to need any special
hardware (screws, offsets) to accomplish this, or are these things
normally shipped with drives?
Change the state of the jumper on the Amiga 2000 motherboard that
states that two floppies are mounted internally.
Add an appropriate entry for the drive in my mountlist, and MOUNT
the drive. I assume the entry in the sample mountlist shipped
with 1.2 is correct for a 5.25 inch, 360K drive drive. I expect
to have to change the unit number in the mountlist to 1 (since
it will be the other internal floppy) and change the device name
to DF1.
Is the above procedure correct? Any missing (or extra!) steps?
Are there any jumpers on the 5.25 inch floppy drive that I am
likely to need to change (like unit number)? Am I likely to
encounter any weird problems like "drive needs terminating
resistors installed"?
