[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga 1500, Was:upgrading graphics on only the HIGH END machines

The Amiga 1500, is an Amiga family machine with the extended chip set.
It comes with 1 Megabyte of CHIP ram on the motherboard, 512K of Kickstart
ROM, a detached keyboard, one built in 3.5" floppy and one built in 3.5"
bay which can hold either a hard disk or additional floppy. There is a
DMA SCSI interface built onto the motherboard. On the back are connectors
for a parallel port, serial port, SCSI disk, RGB video, composite video
(color), stereo audio, and the coverplate for the internal Zorro II slot.
mouse connectors are on the side and _no_ 86 pin expansion connector.
Design is ergonomic with a keyboard "garage" and a tilt/swivel monitor
that sits on top. (The monitor is separate but the base is designed to
sit squarely on the top of the machine.)

The base price of the system unit with one floppy is $995. A complete
two floppy system sells for $1495, the hard disk system (w/40 Meg
hard disk) sells for $1895. This includes either an RGB "standard"
monitor, or a bi-sync greyscale monitor. High resolution color monitors
would of course be extra, but not more than another $250.

Well Commodore, you build one, and I'll buy it, I promise.

Hear hear! I'll buy one too. I'd even be willing to pay up to a couple
hundred dollars more than the prices Chuck quoted. (Don't know if anyone
else would, though :-))

IMHO, I think that machine should have at *least* three slots in it.
(Note: no smilies here!). Have a meg on the motherboard, and standard
Zorro II slots in it. Just sorta imagine it as a b2000 without those
useless Bridge board slots on it. If you can squeeze it into a Baby AT
case, go for it! OOps! Almost forgot - you gotta put the equivilent
of the 2090A on the motherboard! (no internal HD as the bare system,
but with the scsi there, the potential is almost unlimited!)

I too, would invest in this machine! (And I already have a b2000, with
3 megs of ram - no scsi drive yet, but as soon as the 2090A is out,
watch out world!)

Yeah I agree. I would buy one of these. If I could get the 2000
without the IBM PeeCee Cr*p on it i'd buy it in a minute, of course it
would have to sell for less than $1000 (plus monitor). Right now I have
seen 2000's for as low as $1400 and 500's for $569 so 1K would come out
just right. (OK maybe with the A2090A as an option. But not taking up
a slot.)

The IBM slots on the 2000 don't cost much! You CERTAINLY can't
cut out >$500 by dropping a few traces and internal connectors. All
the circuitry is on the bridge board that you don't have to buy
if you don't want it. (I sure don't!) Now if you want to change
the 2000 into a 1500, how about just replacing the IBM slots with
additional Amiga slots? I'd have much preferred this setup. Do
I expect such a system to be cheaper? No. But I LIKE having
room for mucho internal expansion and power to run it. Personally,
I think getting an internally expandable machine with the power of the
Amiga, 3 Meg of RAM, and a 48 Meg SCSI DMA HD for $3000 is a fantastic
deal! Oh well, to each his own...
