[comp.sys.amiga] 500 or 2000 ?

marco@hpuamsa.UUCP (Marco Lesmeister) (08/11/88)

Hello from Holland,

I started up a discussion a few days ago in comp.graphics about
which machine was better: The Amiga or an IBM-AT (compatible).
This became a furious discussion between the both usergroups, and
now I'm convinced I should buy an Amiga.
My next question is this:

should I buy an amiga 500 or an amiga 2000?

Can someone give me the pro's and con's of the two machines?
How much more powerful is the 2000, and is it true I can not easily
expand my 500 as much as my 2000. How about peripherals?
What I need is a good comparison of the two.

Thanks,

Marco Lesmeister, HP Holland.

Ok, let me give it a try, The 2000 comes with 512K more than the 500 but
I have seen 512K expansion for the 500 priced under $150.
You can have IBM compatibility with the 2000 but not with the 500.
The 2000 costs more $$$ but it is a little less expensive to expand.
The 2000 is bigger than the 500.
If you expand with the 500 you need alot of space.
The 500 is about $700 cheaper if you get a 1 meg 500.
The 2000 is now selling for $1499.
The 500 is now selling for $649.

Did I miss anything? I believe those are all the diffrences. Hope I made
things easier rather than harder.

In my mind there is really no choice here. The REAL expandability is in the
2000. Although you will pay considerably less for the A500 at first (even
after upgrading the 500's memory to the same level I would expect the price
difference to be several hundred dollars) you will find hard drives to be
cheaper when you can use the internal power supply of the 2000 and no external
case is necessary. The selection of boards seems to be much wider for the 2000
than the 500, those boards which are available for both ALWAYS are available
for the 2000 first, and it has always seemed to me that a lot of the expansion
stuff for the 500 looked awfully kludgy (just an opinion folks, no flames
please).

When I take the cover off of my 2000 visions of expansion dance before my eyes,
all those empty slots and so much to fill them with (like a 68020 & 68881 or a
genlock).
