[comp.sys.amiga] VirusX 1.6

hrlaser@pnet02.cts.com (Harv Laser) (08/19/88)

Due to numerous email requests, here is VirusX version 1.6 in an ARC
file including docs. The source is no longer included by Steve Tibbett
in his distributions... by now hopefully everyone trusts him. And I hope
you trust me :-)

If this pgm isn't in your startup-sequence by now it should be. The docs
elaborate on all the enhancements, viruses checked for, and etc. Please
read it first.

Please, DON'T post important things like this to comp.binaries.amiga. My
system is no longer getting any binary groups ( too much expensive bandwidth).
This decision was made far upstream of us, so I'm sure there are lots of sites
that are not getting binary groups anymore. I don't care about most of the
things posted to the binaries ( and I can get to the archives, if necessary),
but for programs that everyone should have (such as virusx), a group that
everyone gets and reads is a must.

Well Dave, Steve Tibbett has an odd way of adding to his docs as he
releases each new version of VirusX (which, by the way, is up to version
1.71 now... he found another virus to kill).

I suspect you only read into the docs far enough to see "VirusX 1.4 Notes."
and then stopped reading. Go back and read past that point and you will
see addditional notes on 1.5 and 1.6. Steve puts the new notes at the
bottom rather than at the top. Sometimes. In other words, read th
whole thing... it's all there.

I really don't know the % of UseNet readers who get all 5 Amiga groups vs
those who only receive the 2 message (text) groups. But I think that this
might be a good time for the 5th and newest member of the Amiga groups
(alt.sources.amiga) to come into play. VirusX does include the source code,
and since Peter did start this group to cut down on the lag time, this seems
like a perfect match. If you only receive the 2 message groups then read on...

If the decision was made to stop binary groups at your site (or upstream) then
posting them to one of the message groups is not the answer but finding a valid
alternate method of obtaining those files is. There are quite a few commercial
database services that will have these programs (Bix, Plink, Delphi, CIS). And
if you don't belong to (or want to join) a commercial service then check into
an Amiga BBS. There are hundreds (thousands ?) of them around, most free.
It seems like we sometimes forget that UseNet is not the only avenue for us
to explore. (Yes "we", even Sneakers is guilty of it sometimes. I think the
term for it is lazy :-)

Of course heimat is an Amiga, doesn't everyone run UUCP & UseNet on an Amiga?

Wrong. That is the purpose of comp.binaries.amiga. Your site is an
exception. You should find another source to the software. Perhaps a
friendly site can mail it to you. If comp.sys.amiga was to be cut off
from you would you suggest that all comp.sys.amiga postings be moved
to a more general notes group?

: those who only receive the 2 message (text) groups.

Those of us on Bitnet get only comp.sys.amiga. If louie.UDEL.EDU could be
persuaded to carry the other groups, that would be marvelous, but they're
already doing us a fine public service.

Dan, I spent a year receiving comp.sys.amiga long distance at $10/hour,
so I understand your desire to minimize the cost. It's clear that the
people on Usenet represent a wide range of interests and expertise, and
the percentage of postings that any one person finds interesting may run
low. But still the reasons we're here and not off on some BBS are the
same: (a) timeliness and (b) efficiency.

Naturally, long sources and binaries belong elsewhere, but I hope that
short relevant programs are still acceptable here.

I would not want to see a guideline that would exclude postings like the
"Undelete" program that came from you last month. That was almost 300
lines of uuencode, but if it hadn't been posted here, many people including
myself would still not have access to it.

If it includes the source code, I would be interested in posting that. I don't
like to post binaries except for programmer utilities, after the war over the
creation of the group.

Since I've never gotten a virus, I can't test it, but I can verify that it
compiles and everything.

I'm open to persuasion with regard to the binaries...

My desire is not so much to minimize cost (since I do receive all 5 of
the Amiga groups) as much as is it is to see the binaries and sources
return to there proper groups. Its seems that the posting of binaries
and sources in the message groups have started to become the rule rather
  than the exception.

I would like to see an unofficial guide as to the length of files posted
to a message group. After all UUCP & UseNet survives on a set of guidelines
that are unofficial and I think we could do the same.

As for the UnDelete program, I will admit that in the past ive been known
to post some long files. Thanx for pointing this out to me and I will try
to refrain from doing this in the future. I will continue to post however
they will be in the proper newsgroup(s).
