Since there's a lot of talk about expansion interfaces, I thought I'd pass this on to people who already own or are looking at the subsystem 500. I put an A2090 controller in one and experienced strange disk behaviour, like sudden disk read/write errors after prolonged use. The problem turned out to be overheating. The a2090 gets pretty hot, and with no fan in the expansion box, this heat make the controller act funny and also sends heat on up to your A500. There was SO MUCH heat that it was getting uncomfortable to type... A small fan was a cheap and easy solution and now everything has been working without a hitch ever since. I feel a lot safer getting a memory board now. By the way, I do like my subsystem 500, but the line in the advertisements saying that putting the expansion box under your keyboard makes it easier to type is a crock of shit. Maybe if your fingers are 7 inches long... Out of curiousity, has anyone tried connecting the expansion box with a shielded bus cable so that you wouldn't have to have the thing underneath your amy? Is there any problems with doing this, like maximum lengths the bus can be stretched? Hope this helps someone, --j -- ... {seismo | harvard } ! {uwvax | cs.wisc.edu} ! astroatc!jojo "Some people should die, it's just unconscious knowlege"
