[comp.sys.amiga] Some cheers and jeers for C= Engineering

disd@hubcap.UUCP (Gary Heffelfinger) (08/30/88)

I'm the proud, and almost completely thrilled owner of a new A2000.
I've been an A1000 owner for ... has it *really* been 2 years, and I've
had nothing but good to say about it. From initial indications, the
2000 will provoke the same reactions. I'd like to thank Dave Haynie and
crew for the wonderfully clean and sharp looking motherboard (Rev 4.4).
I've looked at the guts of a number of PClones and I think this puppy
beats them all. (Disclaimer: I are not a injuneer. But I are heavily
biased towards the Ami and against the Peeseas. :-)

Actually the subject line is a little misleading, I have only one jeer.
I question the wisdom putting the keyboard, and game ports on the front
panel of the box. I have a tiny desk any it's tough to keep the
keyboard from bending the keyboard and mouse connectors. Other than this,
I'm pleased with the design. The jet engine fan is going to take some
getting used to, :^), but I'm pleased that it's there. I've no wish to
see any upcoming cards turn to puddles of solder and plastic.

I admit that the extra RAM, the battery backed clock, and the KS in ROM
don't hurt too much either.

Amid all the screams of worried Amiga users who fear orphandom, I'd like
to raise a hearty, albeit corny, yell of "Hip hip hoorah!" for the folks
who brought, and continue to bring us the Amiga.

[Yes. You may all vomit now, as you wish. ;-]

Ok, so what has changed in there since 4.3? Just curious.

Yeah, I'm pleased with the design of the motherboard also, but less so
with the Hong Kong Special power supply (mfg by Elec & Eltec), including the
cooling "turbine" (Shicoh Giken). This past weekend the fan bearing went to
hell, which event was almost immediately followed by one of the larger radial
capacitors developing a leak. This caused the ps to lock down after
progressively shorter periods of time. I took this opportunity to heave the
stock fan and replace it with Radio Shack's 3-inch 12VDC brushless fan. I don't
know if it will last any longer than the old one, but it sure SOUNDS better
(and draws 0.05A less current to boot :-)). This is due to the fact that it
has fewer, wider blades that are set at a steeper pitch, yielding
correspondingly lower RPM for the same flow rate (as any pilot of propeller-
driven aircraft will tell you). The old A1000 fan took this principle to an
extreme, which is one reason why you can hardly hear it. Actually, the airflow
of this new fan seems to be a bit better than the old one. If so, then it is
also more efficient.
The fan is actually quieter than my hard drive now, but the fan is
about 3/16" thicker, so it's a tight fit.

DON'T PANIC

Just a running production change to make things easier to manufacture; there's
nothing added or deleted from Rev 4.3. I think the 4.4 boards can use several
different types of capacitors for Expansion slot and IC bypass, whereas the
4.3 board required specific types. When you buy these things millions at a
time, it's nice to be able to use what ever package design for a component is
cheaper that day.
