First: I'd like to repeat the apology I posted a couple of days ago. I know what a joy children are. I have a 7 year old nephew who spent his infancy in the same house as me. He's the nicest, cutest kid in the world. Experts agree. I also know what an effort coping with kids who cry for five hours every night is, and how important the social rewards of parenthood (including being able to post to the net, hand out cigars (or whatever ritual has replaced this) etc) are in dealing with the trials of 3am feeds (and worse, nappy [diaper] changes ). O.K, so now that I've used up net bandwidth making a case for WHY I AM NOT THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS (aka an uncaring, cold, unintelligent twit), why did I make the post? In this country, and in many others, gay and lesbian people are in a position where we are told we can't be good parents. We almost always lose our children in custody cases. We are almost never allowed to adopt. In many cases, our relationships are shunned, condemned, or illegal. In view of this, it is easy to resent the approval which heterosexual couples expect and recieve for their relationships, the support which they can count on as they grow up, form families, and raise kids. It's easy to resent it, but doing so doesn't help. I know that raining on other people's parades doesn't help, but sometimes, just like calling someone a twit, it makes one feel better for a few minutes. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings too badly. I regard many of the people who post to this group as friends, although I've never met them. -------------------- p.s. I hope no one is too upset at my using up bandwidth with this. I have been explaining why I made the post by mail to the people who posted in reply, but it is beginning to stop me from doing research. Just to make people feel better about it, 2 questions: 1) Is there a curses emulation package which one can use with Manx C, preferably a P.D. one. I'm trying to encourage the port of some CMU neural network software to the Amiga. 2) If you could add a simple, fast speech recognising interface (say 100 isolated words, speaker independent) to an existing Amiga software package (by intercepting I/O messages etc), what package would you choose to add it to. DPAINTII (to replace clicking icons)? what else? My boyfriend and I are interested in playing with doing this, and I'd like to know what program people think would be the most fun to talk to. 2a) Has anyone played with capturing sound with Perfect Sound while still multitasking (i.e. poll poll poll ahah, noise digitise digitise quiet poll poll poll ....). It seems simple enough, but hey, if someone else has written the code... regards. michael the twit -- Michael.Witbrock@cs.cmu.edu mjw@cs.cmu.edu \ US Mail: Michael Witbrock/ Dept of Computer Science \ Carnegie Mellon University/ Pittsburgh PA 15213/ USA /\ Telephone : (412) 268 3621 [Office] (412) 441 1724 [Home] / \
