[comp.sys.amiga] Pict1 is Ready! Really!

joe@dayton.UUCP (Joseph P. Larson) (09/16/88)

Pict1 is ready for the world. It's almost fully available from workbench
as noted in the "Readme" file from the disk listed below.

I feel this is a very strong first disk. The two animations are incredible.
The disk, just like Fred Fish's disks, is freely copyable. However, one
request: if you make a lot of copies for your friends, drop me a note and
let me know. If there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in this, I
probably won't keep it up.

You can order disks from me for $5, which covers everything. Please be
careful to write very legibly when ordering disks. See the information
at the end of the included file.

Also -- I still am looking for material. Pict2 should be out shortly, as
I have about 3 or 4 disks of pictures and such but have to bundle them
together. But PLEASE send me any DMCS music, music program hacks, pictures
or animations you have to include in future disks.

Also note I have a few questions to the world in the readme. If you can
answer any of these, please drop me a note.

-Joe

------

Welcome to Pict1, Joe Larson's first disk of Freely Redistributable
Pictures and Music. The contents of this disk are as follows:

Animations:

There are 2 very good animations on this disk, given to me by the
people at Specialists In in Hopkins, Minnesota. I am told they
were produced with Sculpt-3D and Animate-3D. The authors names
are unknown. Please contact me if you know who created these!

The first animation will bring back happy memories of Juggler.
It's called "BoingMachine". The other animation is called "Birds".
Both include some interesting sounds and great video.

To see them, just pick their icon. Directions will follow. Hit
a space to keep going. Hit the ESC key on your keyboard to exit.

Music:

I have included 4 Deluxe Music Construction Set songs on this disk.
All of these were keyed in by myself. I am sure there are better
DMCS keyers out there, so please understand if something doesn't
	seem quite perfect.

You'll have to load DMCS in order to listen to these songs. If
someone has a PD program to play DMCS-format songs, I'd really
	like a copy.

"Allegro" by Henri Louis Charles Duvernoy.

"Fur Elise" which I believe is a Beethoven piece. I could
			easily be mistaken, however.

"The Murmuring of the Brook" by Eduard Poldini. This is a
nice piece, but I seem to lose a few of the higher notes.
DMCS tries to play them but nothing comes out. If anyone
can fix this problem, please contact me.

"Presbyterian Guitar". I was taught this song by an old
friend of mine named Steve Tarr. He told me the song
was written by John Hartford, but I have yet to find a
Hartford album containing a song by this name. In any
case, Steve is now working at Tektronix in Beaverton.
If anyone knows him, say "Hi" from Joe, will you?
This arrangement has a flute added in with it for
interest. It really adds something. But I'm afraid
the DMCS guitar sample I have doesn't do this song
			justice.

Pictures:

I'm afraid I ran out of space for any normal pictures -- those two
animations are pretty big. But if people send me some, I'll include
	them in later disks.

Ray Tracings:

I only had room for 2 ray tracings on this disk. They were sent to
me by Pat White, the co-moderator of comp.sources.amiga and
comp.binaries.amiga on the USENET. The tracings were generated
by Dave Wecker with the VAX version of his DBW_Render, a shareware
ray tracing program. (I think it was originally distributed as
copywritten freeware, but rumor has it that Dave Wecker has turned
it over to a friend of his, who has made lotsa updates and turned it
	into shareware.)

I wasn't able to load the DISPLAY program from the workbench, I'm
afraid. These pictures are in HAM (Hold And Modify) mode, so
Deluxe Paint and such probably won't do a very good job of
displaying them. So do the following:

		1. Start the CLI from your workbench.
		2. type: "cd df1:RayTracings"
		3. type: "df1:display brick.iff" or "df1:display checker.iff"

Click in the upper lefthand corner of the screen (where the close
gadget would be if you could see if) to exit the display program.
If you can get them displayed from workbench somehow, please contact
me. I'll be putting more RayTracings on my future disks and would
like non-CLI users to easily display them.

I've included the .DOC file for the brick display in the RayTracings
directory. I don't have the one for checker. If there is enough
demand (say: I get a few letters asking for it), I'll include Dave
	Wecker's DBW_Render binaries on a future disk.

Programs:

This disk has three programs on it:

MORE -- the program you're probably using to display this file
DISPLAY -- Dave Wecker's HAM mode display program
		MOVIE -- A movie animator.

Future Disks:

I was recently given four disks chock-full of animations. However,
all I've got is the Deluxe Paint originals -- no animation files
themselves. Does anyone have a program out there that can take
a series of DP files and produce an animation file? As soon as
I manage to get these guys animated, expect to see another bunch
	of animations.

I'm also quickly trying to key in more DMCS music. This stuff doesn't
take much space on the disk, so I have room for a LOT of songs. Hint
	hint.

I still have 6 or 8 ray tracings from Dave Wecker and have heard
rumors that I'll be receiving some others from local sources. Who
knows -- maybe I'll even get some of my own attempts ready to show
	the world.

In any case, please feel free to send me material. I'm collecting
any audio/visual toys for the Amiga that I can get. Make sure you
tell me how it was created, who created it, and that I can redistribute
	it.
