A friend fo mine lost his modem to a lightning strike a while back. He has replaced the modem, only to find the serial port doesn't appear to work. Out local dealer, such as it is, hasn't been able to help. My friend knows something about electronics, but doesn't have the schematics, etc. I seem to remember something about the 8520 chips and swapping them back and forth to see which is bad. My question is - do they affect the serial port? If they do, what affects will we see when we swap the chips, etc? If they don't, anyone know where to start trouble shooting? He plans to get the schematics eventually, but we would like to see if we can isolate the cause before then. He uses Online! software and it doesn't seem to initialize the modem when it starts up and then won't dial, send AT commands, etc. Any help, as always, is appreciated.
