[comp.sys.amiga] 1.3 here and there....

Marc_Neil_Siskin@ub.cc.umich.edu (09/25/88)

My local dealer has announced that WB 1.3 will be shipping from a distributer
(not Commodore) October 1st. He has had KS 1.3 for a day and a half now.
I am only the second non-developer in the Ann Arbor area to have a KS1.3
machine. SO FAR it works fine. I had it running at my dealers for about
4 hours and it ran everything shoved into it's drives. (It is an A500)
The only disappointment is that when I tried the SHIFT/SHIFT ALT/ALT Fkey
credit show is missing.... No more special reminders of the design team and
their moral support. Oh well... Guess they needed the space for all the
neat code. By the way, RAD: autoboots quite well... Almost too well.
:-)

I heard from the same dealer that "the CMI processor accelerated board
refuses to accelerate with the 1.3 ROMs installed, but a fix should be
available RSN."

Has anyone tried using 1.3's RAD: along with another RRD (like
ASDG's VD0:)? I've tried some experiments, and an autobooting
RAD: blows away VD0:'s contents. This is a drag, since I much
prefer the autosizing VD0: to the fixed size RAD:.

I have tried & used VDK: with RAD: (you know I liked Rambo: better :-) and
they both work fine. No problems, or complaints to report.

Please let that dealer know that the Processor Accelerator *does*
work just fine with the 1.3 ROMs! I've had the new ROMs in my machine for
weeks now, with no problem. When I first heard that someone had posted this
rumour to the net (My newsfeed is slooow getting stuff to me...) I asked
Commodore to send me out a couple of the production ROMs. (Just to test
and make sure the mask was the same as the one I had.) They work just fine
also! IT's possible your dealer is working with a very old version of the
togglespeed software (if it's called ToggleSpeed, it's fairly old...) and
that may be what's hanging him up, but he should have received new utility
software. If he hasn't, and he has no access to PLink (The file there is
called PA90.zoo), then have him give his distributer a call so he can get
fixed up. The new software has both the toggling function and the math
chip config function together in the same program, plus several other new
options, including real speed testing to make sure you've switched...

I am a little confused as to how the math coproc. chip fits into all of this on
the PA! Will programs need to be written just for the math chip(that is extra)
or can ANY program take advantage of the math chip??? Is there some kind of
"software patch" to tell the Amiga to use the chip rather than software math??

    So Confused......

P.S. Software math meaning, normal Amiga math routines.
