[comp.sys.amiga] Causes for Optimism

mclek@sunb.UUCP (Larry E. Kollar) (10/11/88)

I think things are really looking up for the Amiga. I have a horror story with
a happy ending, and a couple of other tidbits to share:

(The horror story)
I bought an A500 in March, and found out later that it had arrived with a
fried serial port. The repair center took about three weeks to fix it; the
dealer tested it after getting it back & gave it a clean bill of health.

When I got it home, I had no particular need for the serial port at that time,
so it was a shock when I tried using it and it didn't work.

Back to the dealer (BFJ Computers & Software in Roswell, GA), who were
skeptical at first ("it worked when it left here"), but were quickly convinced.
The proverbial light bulb went on over Frank's (the owner) head: "the power
supply!" Two weeks to get a new power supply.

I got it home, and everything was wonderful -- for about two weeks. Then one
day, the thing just rolled over and died. No smoke, no sparks, nothing
spectacular; just quietly expired. Back to the dealer.

The dealer got on the horn with Commodore, and to make a long story short, my
old A500 is on its way back to West Chester & I have a nice new fully-functional
A500 on my desk at home. So Commodore has come through and done the right
thing, for which they deserve my thanks. Having a decent, knowledgeable dealer
was also a big help. (Rule #1: find a good dealer, no matter what it takes.)

(Other tidbits)
With Apple discontinuing the Mac Plus, pricing the SE beyond the reach of the
normal home computer buyer, and never getting the Mac II within reach to begin
with, the home market looks wide open for Commodore. (My opinion is that Apple
abandoned the home market over two years ago.) Of course, the IIgs (and a
rumored hopped-up version) are competing, but I'd sure like to know where those
400,000 units have been sold -- I find that hard to believe. Apple is rapidly
reaching its goal of becoming another IBM, and a lack of innovation is sure
to follow.

I heard a rumor that 1.3 is already available in Washington DC. My dealer has
ordered two dozen upgrades; I've got dibs on one of them. (Another kudo for
my dealer: he's giving 1.3 to new A2000 buyers.) I got a look at a dealer
bulletin dated September 28 that showed, among other things, 1.3 available.

With Commodore supporting end users, pushing Amigas into education, and
promising upgraded hardware/software (2500 with Unix), I see a long and happy
future for Amiga.

Explanation:	I know from friends of mine, that Apple *is* selling
those IIgs - to kindergardens!!! They seem to be quite ok for that purpose ...
