[comp.sys.amiga] Micron 2 MEG, GVP IMPACT 2000

rjg@tellab5.tellabs.CHI.IL.US (Roger Gale) (10/25/88)

I am having trouble with the new 'mergemem' utility supplied with
AmigaDos V1.3.  I currently have two memory boards in my Amiga 2000;
one is a GVP Impact 2000 w/ 1 MEG of ram, the other is a Micron 2 MEG
ram expansion. My hardware configuration is as follows:

Amiga Zorro II slot #1 = GVP IMPACT 2000
Amiga Zorro II slot #3 = Micron 2 MEG
All other expansion slots are unused.

Autoconfig maps the memory spaces as follows:

	GVP IMPACT 2000 = $200000 - $2FFFFF
	Micron 2 MEG = $400000 - $5FFFFF

When I invoke the mergemem utility, it responds by saying that no
merge is possible. Is my problem due to the order that my boards
are placed into my Amiga 2000? Also, I do not understand why there
is a gap in the memory map from $300000 - $3FFFFF. Is this due to
the autoconfig process or due to the hardware on these boards? I
would like to learn more about the hardware of the Amiga 2000. Can
anyone recommend a good book for this? Thank you very much in
advance to anyone that can offer some help, it is much appreciated!

Mergemem merges contigious memory. What you have there
has a gap...thus it cannot be merged.

The gap is due to the way autoconfig works, the way GVP set up
their board, and the order you have the boards. You can't change
either of the first 2, but you can do something about the last...
Switch the order of your card. Then the 2 meg card will get autoconfiged
first, ending up at 200000-3FFFFF. Then the GVP board will come
in at 400000. Mergemem will be able to merge the memory area then.

The A500/A2000 Technical Reference Manual, available
from C.A.T.S (Commodore Amiga Technical Support) for $40.
is a good place to start.

The quick summary that Andy didn't mention is:
"Autoconfig requires that 2-megabyte memory boards start at a 2-meg
boundary." That's why you can's have 2-meg at $3FFFFF-$4FFFFF.

Right. The memory configured in two chunks as a result of separately
configured boards can only be merged if the addresses are contiguous.
That 1 meg gap is the culprit. You can switch the order of the boards
in order to configure them contiguously, and to allow you to merge
them with mergemem.

they still wouldn't be as fun as a single Amiga.
