[comp.sys.amiga] Which amiga?

simon@ms.uky.edu (Simon Gales) (11/20/88)

I am thinking of getting an amiga as my next system, but would like
some advice on what the best configuration would be.

I have heard of the Amiga 500, 1000, 2000, and the 2500. 2500s don't
seem to be available anywhere yet, but there seems to be a drop-in card
with a 68020 for the other amigas.

First off - what are the speeds (Mhz) of the above systems, and how
much memory does it take to do anything meaningfull?

Secondly - I know there is a 8088 (8086?) bridgecard available, but
how about a 80286 or 386 version? This isn't so important
right now, but could be needed later on.

I want to do C software development, dial-up to my favorite BBSs and Unix
systems, and maybe some video work. How good are the available C compilers,
editors, term progs, etc.?

Finally, what about hard disks - how much room is there in the different
systems for half-height drives, what is the max as far as disk size, and
how hard is it to reach the hard disk from the bridgeboard?

Advanced thanks to anyone who can give advice, please respond via email
unless you feel others would be interested. I'll post a summary of what
I find out if there is enough interest.
