[comp.sys.amiga] I want my Phone Mate

riddle@drivax.UUCP (Riddle) (11/29/88)

I would like a "Phone Mate" on my Amiga.

Does anybody know the where/what/how/why about the hardware to let my Amiga
answer my telephone. It was a feature at the original Amiga 1000 launch.
It was supposed to be coming RSN, but never made it to market.

My friends with I*M type machines can buy a board and software to voice answer
and do menu select from touch-tone phones (like calling Intel). Why can't I
buy/find the PhoneMate project for Amiga. I'd by happy to buy a prototype, or
help do hardware/software work/development/engineering.

Please tell me where the PhoneMate project is, or any leads you know.

Bad news. The product (according to my memory) never made it past a
few rough idea sketchs and a mock-up from which the Phone Mate Glossies
were shot at the 1000's intro time.

I guess (unless someone from Commodore says differently) that the project
was just let die. Although I understand that the Left and Right Audio
out on the serial connector were for just this product (You know,
when someone calls, you get a female voice in one ear and a male voice
in the other ear? Oh, that's right, we don't have stereo phones
around here. Yet. :-)

And you can bet that those boards are pretty expensive too!

No, they really are not. There are at least 3 versions that I know
of in the $200-400 range (BigMouth, Watson, and Complete Answering
Machine) including the voice mail software. Some come with libraries
for roll-your-own work.

Here is another case where we need a dumb bridge board that would
simply let the 68000 have access to the PC bus so we could plug
some of these cards in and write the software to use them. (I think
Chuck McManis argued for such a board a few months ago.)

I want one too. It was one of the reasons I bought the 1000. Real
integration with the phone has still not been done yet. It could be another
standout area for amy.
