[comp.sys.amiga] Thought on Amiga UNIX.

gsg0384@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (12/07/88)

Hi,

I have some thought to share with you ---- Comodore people in particular.
It seems that CBM has an eye to UNIX OS with its Amiga 2500 and 3000.
However, it is behind Apple and NeXT. So CBM needs UNIX source code
immediately.

How about CBM's donation to Free Software Foundation (FSF) for
their free UNIX project, Or to Prof. Andy S. Tannenbaum for his (not free,
but almost) MINIX project. And bundle FSF's GNU-UNIX or MINIX with every
2500 and 3000.

Then people are eager to donate their time with programs that are going to
run under GNU Unix or MINIX. Then CBM's desktop UNIX machine will be the
cheapest among the four companies' desktops (Apple, IBM, NeXT, and CBM)
and their UNIX will be ready right away with the X windows.

Then all that CBM needs is some graphical interface on top of X Windows.
Well, do you, netlanders, have any thought?

OK, OK, I did not know that. Sorry. I received a mail from a kind (?) soul who
responded to my initial posting which starts as :

[ The rest has been deleted]

So CBM is beta-testing Sys V.3 now and developing their window software.
Then please ignore my initial posting, and my apology for the noise.

When are those ready? Are they good enough to be competitive? Any
experience?

A few questions for CATS on the Unix coming out for the Amiga..

 1) Does the C compiler support of the Amiga rom routines? Ie can
I open windows,, draw lines, fill polygones etc.. Or are there
whole new librarys that I have to link with?
 2) VERY IMPORTANT. Does it support job control? Ie can I throw a job
into the background and then recall it later with 'fg'? Can I
suspend a job (ala '^Z') and then push it to the background?
 3) Has any 4.3 BSD enhancements found it's way into it?
