Am I the only one who thinks that there is way too much cross-posting going on between comp.sys.amiga and comp.sys.amiga.tech? (says Erik in a cross-posted message...) It's become a bit of a joke for me. I'll be reading sys.amiga, and, if someone has a question that I can answer, I'll ignore him. Then I read sys.amiga.tech. If I see the question again, I ignore him a second time (unless, in my humble opinion, the question deserves to be cross-posted.) If the article does not show up in duplicate, I dig back through the old articles and help the guy out. I always thought "tech" would be for hardware problems, programming questions, etc. Plain old "Amiga" would be for selling stuff, talking about new software, etc. Perhaps someone else can furnish some more explicit guidelines. Erik Gavriluk (and, yes, the portal.weenie!) | mail: ErikG@cup.portal.com I'm mildly blatant; that's why she loves me. | flames: portal!weenie!ErikG

Cross posting runs from 10-25% on tech. That is, 10-25% of the messages on tech were also posted to the main group. -Matt

>Am I the only one who thinks that there is way too much cross-posting going >on between comp.sys.amiga and comp.sys.amiga.tech? No you are NOT!!!!! It seems to me, however, that a large majority of people do not care about the cross postings. Actually, with a few exceptions, comp.sys.amiga = comp.sys.amiga.tech. To the folks who generally do not cross post EVERYTHING -- Thanks!! Dave S.

> Cross posting runs from 10-25% on tech. That is, 10-25% of the >messages on tech were also posted to the main group. That's ALL???? It seems much higher - like 50%, but I've never really counted. It just seems like summer TV. (Lots of reruns.) Thanks for setting us straight. Dave S.

At this site both amiga newsgroups appear together as comp.sys.amiga. I have been told by one of our administrators that this is because the Notes software has a limitation on the length that it can allow a newsgroup name to be. For that reason please forgive any crosspostings I may make and reply anyway if you can/will. This particular problem may haunt others as well. John Munsch

The Notes software is not really at fault, as it is being used at this site, and we are able to have both comp.sys.amiga and comp.sys.amiga.tech. But we are running BSD 4.3. It is probable that the problem is that your OS only supports 14 char file names and Notes saves each notes-file in it's own directory which needs to have the full name. News gets around this problem by storing the messages in a directory structure comp/sys/amiga and comp/sys/amiga/tech instead of comp.sys.amiga and comp.sys.amiga.tech directories.

There's enough volume on comp.sys.amiga that I wouldn't mind seeing it split into two groups: comp.sys.amiga for regular stuff, and comp.sys.amiga.hard for all the hard drive stuff. This stuff seems to consume about half the bandwidth, making me waste half my time. I can imagine splitting up even further. I think there's precedent in the IBM PC groups. Dan Hankins
