[net.general] Where oh where has the arpa net gone

mckay (10/29/82)

Will someone who knows, please post the following information:

How does one send mail to an arpa site from a usenet site?
Is it possible at all? Is some gateway unreliable or what?

We've tried the address specification as given in the manual
but to no avail. I've also seen posted messages on the net which
are really mail to other individuals on the arpa net, so something
is not working correctly

Would people who know how to address the ARPANET please NOT post the
method to the network?

I know this makes it seem like some kind of elitist thing, and I
apologise to those of you who are missing out. But there are some real
political and technical problems. There IS a gateway, and this gateway
is willing to pass through mail from uucp to arpa and back. However,
the gateway is acting without authorization from ARPA, and technically
could be yanked off the ARPANET for having the nerve to relay mail.
Also, their connection goes through some bottlenecks (including a 600
baud wire). And they are having some problems with mail getting lost
right now, too. So if large volumes of mail were to start going
through this gateway, it might just be enough to cause them to be
forced to shut it off completely. Nobody (including this organization)
wants this to happen, but it could. Large volumes of mail, especially
mail about how to get the latest version of rogue and other unimportant
things (from the standpoint of the Department of Defense, who runs the
ARPANET) could be enough to close the gateway forever.

It is hoped that this situation will be temporary. With the new internet
addressing standard and the coming of an ARPA blessed CSNET gateway,
it can only get better. So please bear with us in the meantime.

If there is someone out there who has a real and important need to
get a message to someone on the ARPANET, please send me mail.
