[comp.sys.amiga] Turbo Silver File Format

ramoskov@sactoh0.UUCP (Robert A. Moskovitz) (12/09/88)

Does anyone have the file format for Turbo Silver as well as how you can
create textures? I was told that they are on Compuserve but I do not
subscribe to that network. If anyone has it, please email it to me.

You can get this info direct from Impulse. They have a disk with
all the formats described (and some tools I think) available for $5 US.
Phone them at (612) 566-0221, they are very helpful, knowledgeable, and
fast. (The following is an unsolicited testimonial.)

Two weeks ago I heard that Turbo Silver 3.0 was out. Since I had
bought V2.0 just a month earlier and had not received anything from Impulse,
I decided to phone them. They informed me that info was in the mail to me,
they offered me some special deals on upgrading to 3.0 (order other product
for $30US and get 3.0 free,...). I gave them my credit card number for the
$10US upgrade. THREE BUSINESS DAYS LATER, V3.0 arrived at my door
(they must have some connections at Canadian customs :-)
The 3.0 upgrade includes a much improved, 147 page manual (printed on
the same high quality paper) and a disk containing the following:
Turbo Silver 3.0, several enhancements over 2.0 including
over 32,000 possible light sources, a slightly improved layout tool, ...
A 68020/68881 version of the above.
A couple of textures (for texture mapping)
Two fonts worth of 2 dimensional "letters".
A model of a robotic hand.

On the whole, Turbo Silver is a very good product from a very good
company. (I have not affiliation with Impulse, or anyone else for that
matter)

P.S. 1 complaint: the outside of the package does not mention you need 1Meg.

If anybody has any of their file formats I would also like a copy. Also
can anybody explain how to produce a decent clear, spun object (Like a
wine glass). I've tried. I can create the shape, set color to none, reflection
to a litle and filter to transmit all. The result is pretty bad.

Anybody out there who knows how to do this?

The texture technology is still not public; they tell me they're
still writing the docs for that.

File format? Well, John Foust of Syndesis probably knows it, but
that may not help you. If you call Impulse and ask them real nice, they may
send you some clues.

Does Turbo Silver allow some sort of text or script file input? Like
Sculpt-3d's scripts, or the ascii input files of VideoScape? (so that
you can generate complex scenes with the aid of custom programs.)

Well, the raytraced image I recently sent to Bob Page via
comp.binaries.amiga (poke, prod) has a couple of decent-looking wine glasses
in it.

After some experimenting, I found that Silver's default for index of
refraction on glass was too high for a wine glass. So I set it to 1.1, and
it came out okay.

You have to keep the wall of the goblet as thin as possible, or the
rays will bounce around inside the goblet until the tracer gives up, and
you'll get the default color. This happens more often than you might think.
The defualt color is what you set the objects color to.

Spin the object, set its color to that of the light source (usually
white), reflection to a little (about 32), and filter to 255. Also, you
might care to set the resolve depth in the global requester to 15. This
will give the rays more chance to bounce their way out of the glass. Also,
set the horizon and zenith colors to something interesting. A good-looking
glass just doesn't happen; you have to put stuff around it for it to reflect
and refract.

If, after playing around, you can't get something good, I'll mail
you the glass I created for my raytracing, which I think is halfway decent.

Incidentally Bob, about when can I expect to see that posted?

We do not currently allow text file input for object descriptions, but
we are making our file formats available for those who may want to
produce their own converters or interfaces. We are also in the
process of adding AREXX to Turbo SIlver. For any other info please
give us a call at: 612-566-0221.
