[comp.sys.amiga] vt100 v2.8a bug?

nsw@cord.UUCP (Neil Weinstock) (12/14/88)

I recently downloaded vt100 v2.8a and found what I believe to be a bug that
has been around for a long time (my version 2.4 also seems to have it). It
is simple: vt100 is not freeing locks on the directories is downloads into.
I first noticed this because I like to download into a temporary area, then
move the stuff where I want it and delete the download directory. I kept
getting "object in use", even if I had exited vt100. Recently, I used xoper
to look at the locks in the system (vt100 was not running at the time, but
had been previously). I found locks from every directory I had used to
download for the past three days (I run my 2000 all the time).

Has anyone else noticed this? I would think it should be reasonably easy
to fix. Tony?

I, too, have been having problems with vt100 2.8a. It seems to have _REAL_
problems with dealing with memory shortages. When I don't have a lot of mem
around and I try to DL, it sometimes freezes --- I can't quit, abort, or
anything. FrUsTraTING. Ditto for trying to hit RA-D to change directory ---
el freezo.

Another problem I'm having, which may or may not be directly related to my
non-wizardry viz a` viz Kermit: VT100 2.4something (which was my last version
of vt100) USED to work when downloading to my VMS system at work; 2.8a DOESN'T!
(I'm using VMS Kermit-32 version 3.1.066) When I DL to kermit on unix, no
problems. Of course, Handshake works with both, only Handshake is quite the
memory hog... (AND Haberfellner doesn't seem to be much on support, grr, but
that's another story ENTIRELY. Although HS is the best vt100 emulator I've
seen...) I suppose Handshake has a more thorough Kermit, though, eh? What's
the story here? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, mucho in advancio. Yours in caffine heaven,

I'll check into this. If anyone else can check before I do, please send
e-mail (I can see it now...everyone scurrying off to their Amigi ;-).
I *have* noticed this behaviour before but I always ascribed it to the
archive pgm that I was using (some level or ZOO or, perhaps, ARC).

Yeah, I'm probably guilty of committing one of the biggest sins in
AmigaLand: not always checking if AllocMem() gave me memory. I'm sorry!
I'll do better...I promise! 2.9 *will* check and put up a message if it
can't get memory.

Hmmm. Is your Un*x system capable of long packets? Is your VMS system
*incapable* of long packets? I have a bug report that says that 2.8 and
2.8A both try to send long packets even when they shouldn't. I have a
fix to 2.8A that I'll post ASAP -- hopefully this will fix your problem.
