i.e. using kermit transfer from a VAX with the VT100 communications program,
if the transfer is not properly completed (in my area it is likely to be
due to phone line problems) we are left with a large file written to disk
but with an empty file length listing.  (I don't really know what this means
in real terms).
!!!!  Luckily I found that the PD DME editor does not care about the listed
file length and loads the whole file.  If the file is then saved, it has the
correct file length and normal file attributes.  You can read it, use it,
and even delete it.  (DME is a neat configureable editor by Matt Dillon, I
used version 1.28 from Fish disk #113)
