[comp.sys.amiga] Rom/Kernal manuals

echarne@bonnie.ics.uci.edu (Eli B. Charne) (12/15/88)

I have been looking for a good book/set of books to learn to program the
  amiga in C.

I have been told that there are a new set of Rom/Kernal manuals comming out,
and that the current ones are not 'beginner' oriented. Does anyone know
when these will be out? or of some other books that are helpful.

                                            Thanks
                                              -Eli

Commodore is working on a V1.3 revision of the Rom Kerenel Manuals.
These will be published by Addison-Wesley. No date has been announced.
The RKMs may be hard to find during the switch from 1.2 to 1.3 editions.
In the meantime, consider these titles:

1) Programmer's Guide to the Amiga, Rob Peck, Sybex,
ISBN #0-89588-310-4, $24.95 This is an introduction
to programming the Amiga in C for those who know C
on other computers and want to learn the Amiga.

2) Amiga Programmer's Handbook, E. Mortimore, Sybex,
   ISBN #0-89588-367-8, $24.95. A reference similar
to the RKMs which covers graphics, exec, WB,
intuition, etc. Very well organized. This won't
teach you to program but is good reference book.

3) Amiga Programmer's Handbook Volume 2, E. Mortimore,
Sybex, ISBN #0-89588-384-8, $24.95. The second
volume by Mortimore covers areas not included in
volume one, devices, audio, trackdisk, console,
printer, parallel and serial IO, etc.

4) The AmigaDOS Manual, Commodore-Amiga, Inc., Bantam,
ISBN #0-553-34440-0, $24.95. Covers DOS commands,
DOS routines for programmers, internal data structures,
   etc. No V1.3 version yet.

5) Amiga Developer's Reference Guide, David Lai,
   Pacific Press-San Jose, $14.95. A comprehensive
cross reference of Amiga routines, libraries,
system structures, variables, constants and macros.
This won't teach you how to program but will cut
way down on the amount of time you spend searching
   through other reference material.

6) Kickstart Guide to the Amiga, Ariadne Software,
   Dacosta Print-London, $19.95. A fine introduction
to the Amiga. Assumes you know a little C.
This is an older title, pre-A2000/500.

7) Inside the Amiga with C, J.T. Berry, Howard Sams,
ISBN #0-672-22625-1. Don't know much about this
one - probably geared to Amiga newcomers.
