Steve Bellovin (unc!smb, rabbit!smb) was kind enough to write wonderful uucp path optimization software, now we need path data from all the sites in order to let the software generate optimum paths. Steve tells me that he's pleaded with you before, but I found the directions that came with the pleas too complicated, so I didn't do anything about it, and I bet that's the way a lot of you feel. So here are some directions that I'll give, and they were conceived in my less-than-admirable mind, so they should be easy to follow (a fallacy, but anyway)... Please mail me (type !mail ...floyd!path to readnews) a note which contains one line, which will consist of the name of your site, a tab, and the names of the sites you uucp to all the time, separated by spaces. My system's message would look like this: floyd harpo vax135 cmcl2 peri lime idis ihuxn research zeppo unc etc. Put on as many sites as you like, at least 5 would be nice. More would, of course, be merrier. If you are so kind as to offer more sites than will fit on a line, then use several lines, starting the followers with a tab. If you have already sent a detailed table to smb, then do this anyway. It won't hurt anything. The big table will be available to the public when the ridiculous amount of mail traffic that this generates dies down. You don't have to be a system administrator to do this, duplicate entries will be cleaned up, and will be better than none. Please DON'T mail to floyd!trb, mail to floyd!path (before midnight tonite). Andy Tannenbaum Bell Labs Whippany, NJ (201) 386-6491
