Would be interested in any such attempts. I simply can't resist to answer this although it might sound a bit commercial. We designed an expansion bus eprom card. It is autoconfig and supports up to 2Meg of ROM using 64KByte eproms (27512). Access to the card is done via a standard device driver which resides on an eprom on the card. So our eprom card is autobooting with Kickstart 1.3. Several partitions can be created to make later expansion possible. Each of these partitions can be used like a standard disk device, e.g. ROM:, ROM1:. Installation is simple: Needed files and directories are placed on normal disks. The installation program reads all disks and creates the necessary hex file for each eprom.
