I hope someone can help me on this.... :-) Here's the scoop: I've got Excellence!, which is quite good as a word processor IMHO. I've got an Alps 224e printer, which emulates an Epson 2500LQ printer. I'm using the EpsonQ printer driver under Prefrences. Now the problem: Whenever I try to do letter-quality mode, it double spaces every line. <argh!> All the other fonts, etc., work just fine. Anyone out there know how I can get this thing to only single space? Thanks in advance. --Dave -- David Guntner UUCP: {ames, mit-eddie}!killer!davidg INET: davidg@killer.DALLAS.TX.US "..Different ship, but she's got the right name. Treat --Admiral L. Anyone out there know how I can get this thing to only single space? Thanks in advance. To adjust the spacing there is are two gadgets on the right side below the ruler (look like ='s ) one increases spacing, while one decreases spacing ON THE SELECTED TEXT! So just select all (an edit option I believe) and adjust the spacing accordingly... BTW this is a great feature, in HS I had papers that had to be, say 10 pages long, so when I was out of things to say at 9 pages or so I increased the spacing to something like 1 & 1/10 (using scribe, but excellence is a lot easier, since you can actually SEE the resulting page length), and then I 'magically ' was at 10 pages (and it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell without getting out a micronometer to check!) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Disclaimer: Me? If so, it's probably giving you an 'auto line feed', as IBM compatible printers tend to do. There may be a DIP switch that controls this as well. -larry -- Frisbeetarianism: The belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | // Larry Phillips | | \X/ lphillips@lpami.wimsey.bc.ca or uunet!van-bc!lpami!lphillips | | COMPUSERVE: 76703,4322 | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+

I had that problem once before when I first purchased my A1000!!! It seems that the typical cables that are made for the printer port of the Amiga's has a particular pin connected that will (at least on Epson's) tell the printer to do a MANUAL line feed (double spacing effect) after each line received! So, what I did was to hack apart my cable and remove the offending pin! Unfortunatly, I don't have any Epson (or compatible) manual's anymore.. So, I personally can't tell you which pin to cut the wire on... Perhaps it is explained in your Alp's manual.. Just look for the Centronics pinout and then look for a pin that is something like... Auto-linefeed..? I'm not sure if there is an easier way to do this, but I know that was what worked for me.. =============================================================================== I Thought So... Now the problem: >Whenever I try to do letter-quality mode, it double spaces every line. In the off chance that my problem is related to your problem, let me tell you about the the quirks I tripped over. I was creating a picture with Dpaint-II and printed a copy on my dot matrix printer, everything was fine. After saving the picture, I rebooted in order to show off some demos. Getting back to work, I added to the picture and tried to print it again. This time the picture came out horizontal bands - 1/8 inch of graphics and 1/8 inch of blank paper, repeatedly. Only after letting the picture print out completely did I see the real problem. A blob that was part of the right edge of the picture showed up in the blank lines. I eventually realized it was trying to print 8.5 inches of picture on a printer that had a limit of 8.0 inches. I had seen a hint in some old documentation that recommended adjusting the left and right margins if bands show up. Changing the margins in Dpaint's print requester had no effect this time. I was very frustrated until I thought to boot from my wife's disk, which had 1.2 on it. At this point, the picture did print properly, and the margin settings did have an effect. Returning to the 1.3 Workbench, I fixed the problem by going into Preference's Graphics-2 requester, and changing "Limits" from Ignore to Bounded and the "Width Limit" to 8.0 inches. This also explains why my Xerox-4020 sometimes sprayed ink past the edge of the paper. Now that I have set the limits to be bounded at 8.0 inches on all my bootable disks, I don't have this problem anymore. I am puzzled, however, as to why the 1.3 printer.device uses 8.5 inches when the Limits setting is Ignore. Page 1-10 of the 1.3 AmigaDOS Enhancer manual states that the width of the graphics dump is supposed to be determined by the left and right character margins. But my experience shows this to not be the case. This is a THEORY, apologies if it's wrong.
I think the problem lies in outputting as text instead of graphics.
The bitmapped font used on screen takes up a certain amount of vertical
space, which when converted to text output, rounds to *2* lines, and
not 1. The only solution is to edit with a smaller text font.
Good luck.
Paul
