[comp.sys.amiga] Responding to the plunge

jwhitman@st-louis-emh2.army.mil (Jerry Whitman) (02/04/89)

To all you AMIGA netters ...... THANKS and more THANKS!!!!!!!

Last week I requested some input my pending A2000 acquisition. My request
was rather lengthly, with many issues. But you folks persevered admirably.

I have gotten several quality responses, no flames, and zero uninformed
replies. Pretty professional if you ask me. (I'm gonna say it even if you
don't ask me!). With your help and a goodly nudge from economic circum-
stances I have made my choice.

I opt'd for the 2000HD and 1084S monitor. When I called my two local dealers
(Systems Plus and Data Byte) I found out that Commodore had a quiet promotion
going on for the 2000HD. The box was going for $2195. This was less than I
could get a 2000 through El-Cheapo Mail-Order and add a good hard card.
Plus, as some one pointed out, I did not have to fight the Prep battle or
worry what happens if I need support and El-Cheapo says "Whazzat??". Local
support is a nice commodity.

Now, why did I decide to go with the lowly 1084S? My primary need for VGA
capability was predicated on the AT Bridge card. It appears this is not on
the immediate horizon, and is probably going to be more expensive than I
want to pop for. Viola' no VGA requirment! Also the 1084S will do fairly
well using the composit input for a video monitor. As previously mentioned
I have lived with an A1000 for some time. It had the 1080 monitor. Hi-res
flicker was not a serious enough problem to warrent the added cost of a
multi-sync and possibly the flicker-fixer for an added $700 or so.

Thanks again for all your input. BTW it did not go down the drain after I
god finished. Another netter asked me for and info I got, so I dutifully
passed them all on to him. Hopefully he will find them as usefull as I did!

Now that we have that out of the way you will be seeing occasional dumb
questions coming from a new 2000HD owner. Perhaps I can stumble on some
little tidbit which will help another neophyte. If so I will try to con-
tribute to this forum as well as receive from it.

Thanks again and keep up the good work. There are many more prospective
Amigoids out there and you folks are having a positive effect.
