Lately, my floppy drive on my 2000 has been acting funny while booting. On first turning it on, it very often asks for the workbench disk even if it is already on. I have to pop out and reinsert the disk several times to get it to boot. Oddly, once booted, there is no problem reading the disk at all. This problem also occurs (less frequently) when doing a warm reboot. Before I drag the machine into the shop, is there something I can do by myself? (the disk is new/reformatted, and it fails on different disks). Darin Johnson (leadsv!laic!darin@pyramid.pyramid.com) Can you "Spot the Looney"?

Before you take the machine in for repairs, try cleaning the drives. It can't hurt. I had a similar problem with my 1000, but with the Kickstart. Use one of those 3.5 in floppy diskcleaners with a nonwoven pad in place of the disk. Then run a program like scrub, or cleandrives to spin the disk. I find that I have to clean my drives every few weeks. WRN Dept. of Physics Carnegie Mellon university
