Version 5v of the Icon programming language is now available for distribution. Icon 5v runs on 4.1bsd and should be easy to port to Bell Labs VAX/UNIX systems. The system includes both a compiler and an interpreter. Complete source code for all system components is included. The system is distributed free of charge if you supply a tape. For $15 we will supply a tape. Version 5 for PDP-11s with separate I/D spaces is still available, both systems can be shipped on the same tape. For those who may not be familiar with Icon, Icon is a high-level language emphasizing string and list processing. It is suitable for most applications in which SNOBOL4 is used, and Icon therefore fills a gap in the hierarchy of languages available under UNIX. Some interest has been expressed in creating an electronic discussion forum (i.e., a mailing list) for Icon related topics. If you would be interested in this, please send a note to the address given below. We will probably distribute the list via CSNET, and with sufficient interest, via Usenet on net.lang.icon. We are interested in getting Icon 5v up under VMS using VAX-11 C, and will provide source code and technical assistance to anyone who might like to undertake this project. We have established an electronic mailbox, arizona!icon-project (Usenet), icon-project.arizona@rand-relay (CSNET/ARPANET) for Icon questions and problems. Currently, we have uucp connections to gi, mcnc, purdue, and utah-cs. To get an Icon system, specify the following (where applicable): Your Name Address Organization Telephone Network Address Icon systems that you want (i.e. Version 5 for the VAX, Version 5 for the PDP-11, or both.) Desired tape density (800 or 1600 bpi) and send a tape at least 1200 feet long (or check/money order for $15 payable to The University of Arizona) to: Icon Project Department of Computer Science The University of Arizona Tucson, AZ 85721 Bill Mitchell arizona!whm whm.arizona@rand-relay 602-626-3685
