[comp.sys.amiga] Help with AUX and terminal

daves@hpcilzb.HP.COM (Dave Scroggins) (02/28/89)

I am having a bit of a problem with my serial port I hope someone
can help me with.

I tried to hook a terminal up to the serial port and run it through
the AUX device. I know the terminal works because I can use it with a HAYES
modem with no problems. (Also the cables are good.) I can also use the
modem with the AMIGA through the serial port.

I make sure the AUX is mounted, then type, "newcli AUX:" as it says in the
1.3 manual. I make sure the baud rates and such is set right.

But nothing happens with the terminal. No commands entered, no echo, Zip!

I believe another problem is related -- I also get no luck hooking up a
serial interfaced (RS-232) PaintJet to the serial port. I make the PaintJet
pick in preferences and select the "serial" gadget. I have both the
AMIGA and the paintjet set for XON/XOFF handshaking. (I tried No handshake too)

So I figured I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks for any help,

Dave S.

You probably need to get a "null modem" style cable, one that swaps RS232
transmit and receive lines (2 and 3). In the jargon of the RS232 spec, your
modem is "DCE" (Data Communications Equipment) and your terminal is "DTE" (Data
Terminal Equipment). DTE will connect to DCE with a straight through cable, so
hooking up your modem to your terminal works fine. Your Amiga's serial port is
a DTE device, so hooking up the modem to the Amiga is again no problem with a
straight through cable. When you try to hook up the terminal though, you are
connecting DTE to DTE, so you need to swap lines 2 and 3 in your cable in
order to ensure the transmit line of one device goes to the receive line of the
other. If all this seems obscure, just ask your dealer for a "null modem" cable.

Did you remember to put a null modem in the line? I don't remember the
pin numbers, but with rs232 you have a "send" line and a "receive" line.
Normally your amiga, or your terminal, writes data to one, and the modem
writes data to the other. With the terminal connected directly to the
computer, both are writing to the "send" line (which no one is reading),
and both are reading the "receive" line (which no one is writing to).

The null modem swaps the lines in the middle so what one side writes can
be read on the other end.

Try using a replacement AUX: handler. The one I'm using right now, I
got for use with Harald Koch's UUCP and is (or is based on) one that
was posted to the net a while back by Steve Drew. It works better
than the standard 1.3 handler for just such stuff as running a cli
from a terminal.

I hope that suggestion has at least some relevance to your problem.
