I was having trouble with DNET hanging up on me when I dialed in through our port selector. It turned out the problem wasn't 7 bits. Unknown to most of the users, the port selector has an escape control character which allows you put a session on hold and get back to the selector prompt. This will eventually show up in a checksum or something, which leaves DNET sending an endless stream of ACK requests to the selector. Fortunately I was able to find out how to disable the feature. So if you are having trouble with DNET, try asking whoever manages the dial in hardware if there are any non-printable characters or sequences that wouldn't get passed, or that would interupt a session. -don perley
