[comp.sys.amiga] Second external floppy

wn0e+@andrew.cmu.edu (William Nichols) (03/03/89)

I would like to attatch a second external floppy to my Amiga 1000. When I try
this by simply daisy chaining two A1010s, df1: works, but I get df2: bad, or no
reaction at all. It looks like the power is not passed through or something.

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get this to work?
Thanks.

Take your external floppy into a service center and have them hook up the power
to the port.

The early external floppies didn't have the power hooked up for some reason,
but all it takes now is a few minutes of a techie's time and probably about 25
bucks in service charges :-).

I believe old A1010's did not pass the power, as you note. I understand
there's plenty of power available if you aren't trying to power too many
things external to your amiga. I don't know what the daisychain socket
on an A1010 looks like, but you might be able to add a jumper in the first
A1010 to pass power. Pin 12 is for +5 volts, and pin 23 is for +12 volts.

As I recall the manual that comes with the A500 or maybe the A1010
specifically states that you SHOULDN'T daisy-chain the A1010 drive. I'm
sure there is a good reason for them to say that. I suggest getting a
drive with it's own power supply, or a separate power supply with
multiple outputs.

When I bought my second external drive for the A1000, I had the same
problem. ie, the system could not see the second external drive. This
appears to be because the A1010 ? does not pass the power along. My
solution was simple. Switch the order of the drives. My newest drive
is now df1: because it passes the power along and the older drive
is now df2:. See if this works. It's a cheap solution.

As I remember, the A1000 does not have a hefty enough power supply to
reliably (read: eventually not smoke) power more than one external
floppy disk drive. That is why the original external disk drive
sold with A1000 did not pass thru the power.

With the Amiga 2000 I suspect this restriction does not apply and
therefore new external drives from Commodore may pass thru the power.

If your new drive draws less current on the voltages that matter
(+12, +5 ??) then an A1000 MIGHT be able to hack it.

The A500 has a good reason -- the power supply is tightly budgeted. The
A1000 was built with a much more generous power supply which can easily support
two or even three daisy-chained external floppies.
