Although I've never seen the insides of a 1581, my advice to you (if you don't plan on using the 1581 as a 1581) is to build a simple 3.5 interface for the amiga (plans for this are floating around in the public domain) and then rip the actual drive mechanism out of the 1581 and attach it to the interface you built. Add a cheap 3.5 drive case, and your set.
