[comp.sys.amiga] Default fonts

admiral%m-5@Sun.COM (Michael Limprecht SUN Microsystems Mt. View Ca.) (03/26/89)

I've just got a bigger monitor working on my system and would like to
use a smaller font in the cli so I can make use of the extra screen.

Anybody out there done this and how?

I'm going to start digging into this but i'm sure somebody else
could save me some time.

Thanks in advance.

This is not hard to do. There are two ways that I'm aware of (there may
be more). The simplest is to get Dave Haynie's Setfont utility (PD) and
copy the font of your choice into the FONTS: device (defaults to the
subdirectory FONTS on your Workbench disk) or can be reASSIGNed to any
directory you wish. Setfont works best with monospaced fonts. Proportional
fonts are not happy in the CLI under most circumstances.
The second way is to actually modify the font data on your Kickstart
disk. There is a utility called Tracker which can help accomplish this and
there are a couple of fonts which will fit in this area of the disk; I
believe PEARL is one of them. This way you always have the font you want
in ROM which is the more elegant solution. If you're not used to overwriting
sectors and zapping disks, you might wish to stick to the first. If you're
comfortable with modifying disks, the second is cleaner.
