# Still I sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys; Bedlam boys are bonny. For they all go bare, and they live on the air, Any they want no drink nor money. -- The Boys of Bedlam (trad) To add to the music vs. machine moonlighting discussion, Stan Kelly-Bootle certainly gets my nomination. Mr. Kelly-Bootle, largely known as the author of the infamous Devil's DP Dictionary and the inventor of Errosol (TM) bug spray ("caution: may require a second application for CP/M programs"), has the distinction of being the world's first Computer Science graduate (Cambridge University, 1953.) Lesser known, however, is his distinguished career as a folksinger. Do investigate Topic Sampler #7, Sea Songs and Shanties, for Kelly's striking rendition of Maggie May. His own compositions have been recorded by the likes of Cilla Black and Judy Collins. If you are aware of other disks, please submit titles/reviews to these pages or to the location below. I've never met the man, but I understand his last known whereabouts, after high jinks in England, is somewhere in Silicon Valley, teaching UNIX seminars. -- James A. Woods {dual,hao}!ames-lm!jaw

Yes, Stan Kelley is alive and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is frequently a floor singer at the "Folk at the Castle" folk club, which meets the first and third Thursdays at the Edinburgh Castle Pub on Geary Street between Polk and Larkin in San Francisco. This is a real British-style folk club run by Dick Holdstock and Alan McCleod (who are English and Scottish, respectively). It meets in a room above the main bar, plenty of good beers on tap (Guiness, Bass, Courage, etc.); there is usually a featured performer plus floor singers (any one who wants to get up and sing a couple of songs). It's a very friendly atmosphere and a good place to hear music; there is an emphasis on songs with choruses that everyone can join in on. The next meeting will be April 5, which is a Singers' Night (all floor singers, no featured performers). On April 19, the featured performer will be Cliff Halsam (I think that's right - I don't have the flyer with me). If you want more info, feel free to contact me.
