[comp.sys.amiga] Wanted: Features/Summary of "The Science of Fractal Images"

hubey@pilot.njin.net (Hubey) (04/09/89)

In answer to the questions on Mandelbrot Sets, Fractals etc:::::

Peitgen has two books with coauthors. Both are large size, lots of
beatiful, color and B&W pictures. I don't remember seeing any
algorithms in either book. If you are interested in this field there
are other books on fractals and other related topics.

Many of these topics are related or are different names for the same
thing: Chaos Theory, Dynamical System Theory, Complex systems Theory,
Iterated Function Theory, Iterated Maps, Strange Attractors, Cellular
Automata, Fractals, Fractional Dimension, Cantor Dust

and in these fields one finds names like Mandlebrot, Julia,Sarkovskii,
Gaston, Feigenbaum, Poincare, Lorentz, Sierpinski, Cantor

and references to things like Logistics Map, Iterated
Liapanov Exponents, Fractal Dimensions, Hausdorff Dimension, Period
Doubling, Limit Cycles, Butterfly Effect, sensitivity to initial conditions

The above topics and thinggies can be found in these books--among
others:

Chaos, H. Gleick
A layman's view of some "bizzare" things like fractals,
dynamical system theory, iterated function theory, etc

Exploring The Geometry of Nature, E. Rietman
Similar topics as above with some Basic code

Fractals Everywhere, Michael Barnsley
Highly mathematical text on Iterated Function Systems

The Mathematical Tourist, Ivars Peterson
A highly readable book along lines of Gleick's book.

Cellular Automata Machines, Toffoli and Margolus
A book on things like "The Game of Life"

The Science of Fractal Images, Barnsley, Devaney, Mandelbrot,
Peitgen,Saupe, Voss.....There are some algorithms in the
Appendix...mostly mathematics and pictures.

I think this should be enough to give anyone interested in this field
a nice start .... 8-)...

regards

mark

11TSTARK@GALLUA.BITNET (Timothy Stark) (04/09/89)

Hello Graphics-power users:

Many of you pointed me to "The Science of Fractal Images". Yesterday,
I went to my local university library at Gallaudet University. I searched
data in Library's computer and found it that called "Fractal" by B.
Mandelbrot. I took a printout from computer and went to book shelf sections.
I found it. Last, I examined it. Finally, I was suprised that book was
pointless. I did not understand that book explains. It had no alogrithms
in the box area but explains alogrithm in English. I still did not understand
that eassy explains. I left the book alone.. I complaint that books which
explains alogrithms, should show the raw alogrithm code in box area but
*NOT* in English!! The book was very confused! I can understand the raw
alogrithm code clearly, but not english.

Well, What is features and summary of "The Science of Fractal Images"
by Peitgen and Saute? I will not buy pointless books unless you recommend
me that. I went to Ballston last minute and I unable locate that book.
Then, I asked salesman for that book. The salesman looked item in his
catalogue and found it. He said me that it costs $34.00. I thanks to him
for more information about cost. I will consider to purchase it after
you explain me that summary of "The Science of Fractal Images". I have
that questions for you:

Is the real alogrithm code in that book?
(Not english-like alogrithm, Just Pascal-like alogrithm.)

         Has it colorful images?

How many pages does it have?

Thanks for your replies.

P.S. I do not subscribe to comp.graphics, just reply me directly.
