[comp.sys.amiga] booting from server

hubey@pilot.njin.net (Hubey) (04/16/89)

I have an almost hypothetical question for those who might have a set
up similar to this:

Suppose I set up a LAN of AMiga 2000's with a floppy drive each and a
couple of Sun stations as File servers. The AMigas would have the
Ameristar Ethernet boards and associated software. Let's assume that
this is for a school and I don't want to require the students to have
to buy their own versions of AmigaDOS.

	1) Can the Amigas be set up to boot-up from the file servers
using any combination of PD-shareware etc. We could sell formatted bootable
floppies in our bookstore!!

	2) Is it possible to hide whole directories under AmigaDOS.

	3) Is it possible to write-protect directories so that
they are student-proof..(at least for the novice and intermediates!!
:-).. Would this protection be provided under UNIX-Sun or AMiga-DOS ?

Thank you all..

In order for the Amiga to be able to boot-up from the file server, the
Ameristar board would need an EPROM similar to what is found on a hard
disk controller. I understand that Ameristar is going to be coming
out with such boards for the Amiga 500 and 2000. But I don't understand
what formatted bootable floppies are you talking about. You don't need
bootable floppies if you boot-up from a file server.

No, it is not possible right now.

You can write protect directories from the Sun side. Then those directories
would not be accessible from the Amiga, unless the students can login
on the Sun and change the protection on you :^).

->Thank you all..

You're welcome.
