[comp.sys.amiga] RLL drives -> Amiga

alh@hprmokg.HP.COM (Al Harrington) (04/11/89)

I've got an Adaptec RLL controller (IBM) and 2 ST238 drives that I'd like
to hook up to my Amiga 500.

Can someone tell me what expansion box I could buy (or make) that would let
me do this?

Thanks in advance.

Step one: Throw away the IBM RLL controller. There's kludges like the
"Wedge" that'll let you do it, but you don't want that.

Step two: Buy a C Ltd. SCSI controller and an Adaptec 4070 SCSI-to-RLL
adaptor. Total cost: around $300.

Step three: put your drives in some sort of case, figure out what kind
of power & cables they need, hook everything up, and run'er. Cost
depends on what you have in your electronics junk box. e.g. if you
have a surplus IBM power supply, or a couple of old computer cases
with spaces for half-height drives, or whatever. If you buy a case,
with a power supply, it'll probably run you about $80.

I've gotten around 300k/second diskperf out of a similiar setup (using
a Miniscribe 40ms drive -- dunno what your Seagrates will do). If you
want real scream, get a high-performance SCSI controller and a high
performance SCSI disk drive. But if you can't afford that, well, it's
better than nothing....
